TOWN BOARD MEETING [ From the “ Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] The monthly meeting of the Bulls Town Board was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs J. E. Walker (in the chair), V. Edhouse, T. Ellery, W. E. Robbie, C. H. Broughton and F. A. Holland. The foreman’s report was read, showing that main roads had been graded, and water-tables cleaned out. Tar had been procured from the factory, and metal screened at the pit. Metal had been spread on footpaths in Bridge Street. The culvert in High Street, and footpath in Bridge Street had been damaged through heavy traffic in connecton with the erection of Mansell’s buildings. The manager of the Bulls branch of the Bank of New Zealand w r rote advising of the increase of the rate of interest on overdrafts to 7 per cent. — It was resolved to protest. The Palmerston North Hospital Board agreed to .Bulls being included in its area subject to the approval of the Wanganui Hospital Board and the Rangitikei County Council and provided that satisfactory terms be arranged as regards the merger. —The chairman was authorised to interview the bodies concerned.

The Pubic Works Department advised that a cheque for £BB 6s Gd, subsidy under the Highways Board, had been placed to the Bulls Town Board’s credit at the Bank of New Zealand, Bulls.— Received. The Municipal Association of New Zealand invited suggestions from affiliated bodies re amending of Town Planning Act, 1926. —Received. Mr F. A. Holland’s motion that a fire siren be erected to warn local residents was considered. The mover said that willing fire-fighters were always available, and the need of a warning siren was imperative. Prices were quoted, ranging from £25 to £27 10s, and. the cost of installation would be about £5. After a long dissension a committee comprising Messrs Holland, Edhouse and Broughton, was appointed to bring forward information at the next meeting regarding cost of siren, and place of location of tho alarm. Mr T. H. Battle, architect, of Wanganui, submitted plans for enlargement of supper room, etc., at Ihe Town Hall, the cost being estimated at £6OO. —As the Board had agreed to expend only £350 on improvements and additions. the plans were referred back to Mr Battle. Rates were agreed to as follows: General 1/5, lighting 6d. The footpath rate is to be collected. Mr C. Broughton was authorised to make preliminary arrangements regarding the clearing-up of paths, etc., in the cemetery. Accounts showed credits as follows: —General account £436; post office £314. less £lOO due to heavy traffic; cemetery £32 3s 8d; library £4l 2s. Accounts passed for payment were: General £74 4s Bd, library £2 -12 s. The library committee reported that £lO worth of books had been ordered. The works committee for the ensuing month are: Messrs Walker, Broughton and Edhouse. Domain Board Business The same members sat as a Domain Board. The credit balance was shown as £24 17s 9d; accounts collected £2B 14s fid; accounts passed for payment £2 17s 6d. CONCEIT SPOILS SUCCESS Newcomers in the movies are prone to think too much of themselves, according to May McAvoy, who is appearing in the featured feminine role of First National’s “The Savage,” on Saturday night at the Bulls Town Hall. Miss McAvoy says that many newcomers hurt themselves because they cannot stan! the first praise they receive and get what is known as swelled heads.
