CYCLING

ENTHUSIASTIC ROAD RACERS COMMENTS OF INTEREST. (By “Itylus.”) Cyclists who have taken up roadracing for this season continue to display enthusiasm, and the sport is wellestablished in Wanganui. Weather no Deterrent. Despite the bad weather conditions, a field of eleven faced the starter last Saturday; and good racing resulted. Consistency has been shown by Mr C._ Chaincy in his handicapping, and close finishes have been the order each week. West Coast Distance Event. The West Coast 5-mile road championship is to be held at New Plymouth this year ,and the rider making fastest time is to be sent to the New Zealand road championship (Mercer to Auckland) by the Centre. This fact should be an incentive to local wheelers to keep in training. Making their Mark. Galbraith fulfilled expectations by winning last week in good time. Paul and Gannon both gave good displays for’their first rides and should be prominent shortly. Approaching Events. r Pbe next race is to be held on May 28 and a number of new riders may be expected on the road. A Club run is to be held on May 22, starting from Victoria Park at 10 a.m., when a new block will be inspected. Activities in Hawera. At a well-attended meeting of the Hawera Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held last week, it was decided to promote a series of cycle races during the coming winter. The opening date was se't down for Wednesday, June 8, when a distance event of 18 miles will be held. The preliminary programme for future races was drawn up as follows:—July, 30-mile event; August, 57-mile event; September, 120mile event. Arotind the Mountain. The September event will be a race on the same lines as the professional “Round the Mountain,” which is held over the best roads in New Zealand. The amateur event should therefore attract a good field of outside competitors, and as this race will in all probability be held prior to the Palmerston North to Wellington event, it will serve as a good “try-out.” Palmerston North-Wellington. i The preliminary arrangements in ‘connection with the Palmerston North ito Wellingtton road raco were made • last week. Mr O’Sullivan outlined the I proposal of the Dunlop Rubber ComIpany, who are paying the cost of sendling the rider making fastest time in I this big amateur event to compete in Australia’s greatest amateur race— Colac to Melbourne. The New Zea1 land event will now be known as Dun- ' lop’s Palmerston North to Wellington Amateur Road Race. ! The success of this amateur event is now assured ,and this year’s race should easily exceed the initial event in the matter of trophies, number of entries, and public interest. Already enquiries arc being received from different parts of the Dominion, and in most of the centres long-dis-tance events will be held preparatory !to deciding local representatives.

From all parts of the land is the challenge of Mr J. J. Roberts taken up by enthusiastic Kdgeworth fans. “I have smoked good old Edgeworth for over 21 years,” declares Mr John Hill, of Auckland, “and I am going to smoko it till I die. There’s no other tobacco in the world like it.” “I smoked Edgeworth in Australia thirty years ago,” says Mr R. C. Vent, of Timaru, “and I have smoked it ever since it came on the market here. During all that time I have never noticed the slightest variation in its uniformly high quality.” Other Edgeworth fans have already entered the lists. Send your experience of Edgeworth also to the New Zealand Distributors, Barlow Bros, Christchurch.
