WANGANUI PIERROTS
A BRIGHT SHOW SUCCESSFUL INITIAL PERFORMANCE Opening with a bright tl Co-Opti-mistic” programme and closing with an hour of smart vaudeville acts, the show presented, by the Wanganui Pierrots at the Opera House last evening quite excelled usual amateur standard and was typical of the talent which an energetic producer can find in the city. Jack Stone’s Dance Orchestra immediately put the audience in holiday spirit, and after the company had introduced themselves the acts came on without any of the hitches so frequently found in amateur work. .The setting of black curtains, which was effectively increased by one gold standand lamp was almost striking in its simplicity, and the company employed a minimum of "props” and relied on personality. Mr Basil Dean, the producer was a tower of strength, to the company, ami his "Bagging the Classics” and the very amusing encore number which followed were distinctly original. The voices in this band of amateur players are very good indeed and the programme showed a nice discrimination in comedy and. more serious work. Mrs T. L. Sparring and Miss A. • Greening have already won their spurs as accomplished actresses, and with Mr Dean and Mr Frank Crotty—a clever comedian—they made a great {success of "Tea Tattle.” The Lyric ‘Quartette could have sung all night Giad the p-ogramme permitted it and the • individual members, came to light at frequent intervals. A singing violinist is a potential attraction which few enterprencur have essayed, and Miss Doris Hughes’ act was particularly engaging. Mrs S. Wills’ contralto numbers were perfect in technique and for her initial perIformance in public she made an instantaneous success. The programme which included a remarkable tongue-twister of Basil Dean in which the audience was invited to join. "Wood’s Wood-Work,” closed with the anthem of the Ancient Order of Froth Blowers. It was a bright show and augurs well i for future performances.
