TAIHAPE

[ From the “ Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] Heavy rain and strong southerly winds set in on Sunday evening, and it is still very unsettled, to-day there be ing cold winds with wintry showers. After the frosty nights for the past two weeks and the beautiful warm days, the change is feit very keenly and colds are very prevalent in the district. The Ohutu Social Club held their weekly euchre tournament on Fn fay evening, when there was a large attorn i- I ance. The ladies’ trophy went to Mrs Irons and the men’s to Mr W. Johns. The monthly aggregaic was won by Mrs I R. Thurston and Mr D. Kennedy. The { supper arrangements were in the cap- I able hands of the ladies ’ committee md I were carried out in their usual excel- • lent manner. The decorations of the town for the i Governor-General ”s visit arc certainly ■ very nice, but why some of the bus;-1 ness people have gone out of their ■ way to cut down beautiful pungas and ; flax bushes to decorate for one day is ' a suprrise to most townspeople, who | adore the standing native bush as it is. J On Saturday night, a car owned by ; Mr R. Lowry and driven by Mr Mills : went over the bank near Moawhango. j but was held up by a fence after turn j ing over once. The three occupants of j 1 the car escaped without serious injury. ' On Saturday night, about six o’clock, I Mr F. Kelly was driving home to Omtitane in his car. and. in passing another car with only one headlight and that on Jhe offside, came into collision with it. 1 Both cars were badly damaged, but • none of the occupants was injured. : Mr and Mrs C. Cherry, who have been away in Australia for the past six weeks on holiday, returned to Taihape on Saturday evening. At the railway yards this morning, while working on the coal heap, Mr B. Derbridge had the misfortune to be struck by a coal huckotand was removipd to the hospital. It is believed that he had some ribs broken, but noth : ng definite was available as to his condition at the hospital at the time of : writing. The town to-day is being beflagged and decorated under the supervision of Mr T. H. Marlow, and there is no ques- ; tion al to his ability in making his • work a success for the visit of the ’ Governor-General.

FOOTBALL The Pirates-Hautapu match on Sat--1 urday was one of the best from the i spectators’ point of view, played here . for years. The tackling on both sides was great. ' The Pirates had the best forwards : and on nearly every occasion got the ! ball away from the scrum. McClure played half for Hautapu, his first game of the season, and has improved a good Ideal since he played in the same posi--1 Cion for Pirates last season. Goer, for Pirates, played first fiveeighths and put up a beautiful exhibition, possibly the best on the ground. The score stood Pirates 3, Hautapu nil until about twenty minutes to go when Horton, for Pirates, got offside twice. ! Each occasion Bennett converted, the ; final result being : Hautapu 6, Pirates i. 3. Though Pirates were beaten they ; were certainly not disgraced. Comments on the Game. • Darvill played full-back for Pirates [and that is certainly his position. He i handled the ball well and played ‘with 'confidence and safety. ; Bellis was a marked man all day and got very few chances. ; Leahy, Kilkolly and Horten played a I hard game and their tackling was superb. W McLennan, for Hautapu, was one of the best backs for his side and created some fine openings which were not all taken full advantage of. | “ Toby ’> Bennett hardly took a clean [ball all day, but compensated by coni' verting two penalties, which won the ’game for Hautapu. Ancwer to Query. ARGUMENT.—B win as the Marlgin A gave does not make the Hautapu total more than three above Pirates’ score.—Sports Editor.
