“PALS FIRST.” [ From the “ Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] To Dolores Del Rio, who comes to the Marton Town Hall this evening in “Pals First,” goes the credit for the introduction of a new fad that is now sweeping Hollywood. The new fad is called the Comb-Idol, and consists of an ornamental head-comb, in which are placed minatures of movie favourites. As many as three or four miniatures may be worn in the comb. The fad originated in Spain and Mexico, according to Miss Del Rio.. Another exciting episode of the serial “Perils of the Wild” will also be shown. Coming on Wednesday are: Olive Borden and George O’Brien in “Fig Leaves.” RETURNED SOLDIERS. A meeting of the executive of Marton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Friday evening, Mr. G. B. Gregory presiding. Regarding a suggestion put forward at the annual meeting, that the executive consider reducing the subscriptions of country members, it was decided that the benefits accruing to country members are equal to those received by the town members, and no reduction will be made. It was reported that negotiations were on foot towards including farmers’ merchants in the Association’s cash purchase scheme. The successful issue of these negotiations would be of immense benefit to country members. It was mentioned that an average individual expenditure under the cash purchase scheme represented an annual saving of about £lO to each returned man taking advantage of the scheme. GENERAL NEWS. Mr. M. N. Atkinson, jnr., has been appointed secretary of the Marton Golf Club owing to the resignation of Mr. R. A. Downey. A general meeting of the Marton Chamber of Commerce will be held in the Marton Jockey Club’s room this evening to consider the action of the Associated Banks in increasing the rate of interest. RANGITIKEI RUGBY. RATA DEFEAT MARTON. The Rata-Marton Rugby match was played at Rata on Saturday, the home team proving victorious by 9 points to The first spell ended 6—3, G. Hartley and J. Potaka scoring tries for Rata, and P. Gronn a try for Marton. Play w'as fairly even until half way through the second spell, when R. Stevens, N. Kane, and J. Cameron crossed for Rata, G. Hartley converting two tries. The Rata backs were too superior in the latter part of the game. . Mr A. Henwood refereed. Bulls and Hunterville Draw. The Bulls-Hunterville game at Hunterville, resulted in a draw —6 points scored by each side. Kiotahitanga v. Ohingaiti. Owing to insufficient notice of the change of ground, the above game did not take place at Marton. Third Grade. Athletic (11) and Old Boys (6) .met at Marton Park, the game arousing an exceptional amount of interest as neither team had so far been defeated. Rain before the match made conditions unpleasant for the players and the ground was very slipperyq. Athletic won by two tries, one converted, and a penalty goal to two penalty goals. McChesney scored the two tries for Athletic. Whale converted one and kicked a penalty goal. F. Gibbons kicked the two penalty goals for Old Boys. An Old Boys player, T. Lyon, was ordered off late in the first spell. Mr R. Rivers was referee.

Hunterville Thirds defeated Rata Thirds by 9 points to 8. Owing to insufficient notice of change of ground the Kotahitanga-Bulls third grade game did not eventuate.
