WITH A FIRM HAND

CONTROL OF A MEETING MR BIGNELL IN THE CHAIR In congratulating Messrs J. Morrison and W. J. Rogers on their re-election, Mr A. G. Bignell. chairman of the Wanganui Harbour Boand’, speaking at the monthly meeting of that body, referred to “absurdly inaccurate” statements made during the recent election campaign. The statements, he said did not affect him in the slighest, as he had been so long on the job that they were Ike water on a duck’s back. However, the statements were not fair to the port or the electors. Mr T. Lovegrove got up to speak, and the chairman said: “Iflr Lovegrove, you sit down. You must obey the chair, otherwise you won’t sit here.” The chairman then went on to say that the accounts and bank books were always placed befiore members on the table, and were at their dsposal and they were expected to peruse them. As far as the conduct of the Board meetings was concerned, he had never been a strict adherent to the rules of debate, but at the same time every respc.it must be paid to the chair. He would allow no cross-talk, and questions would have to be asked through him, and co one else. There was only one way to conduct public meetings, the charman must rule, otherwise they would nave chaos.
