A STOLEN WATCH

YOUNG WOMAN’S LOSS ACCUSED REMANDED FOB SENTENCE At the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, Martin Lopez was charged with the thetft of a gold watch, the property of Annie Tobin. On April 28, the owner said, accused came to say good-bye to her at her room. Later she missed her gold watch. Accused communicated with her from Palmerston North stating that he had the watch. He later wrote and saiiti he had lost half his clothes and the watch at an hotel. He also informed her that he had reported the loss to the Palmerston North police.

Lopez said that the first he knew of the watch was at Palmerston North, when he found it in his pocket. He was about to leave for Taihape when he missed the watch from his bag. Lopez further stated that he was about to come to Wanganui when he was arrested.

Sergeant Sivyer: You were pretty short of money before you left for Palmerston?—l had two or three pounds. Where did you get that?—Somebody gave it to nle. Asked how he got the watch into his pocket, he replied that ho could not say, the lady may have put it there. The Bench: You had been previously been convicted of dishonesty and had to be more careful than other men. When you found the watch in your pocket why didn’t you send it straight back. I don’t know. To Sergeant Sivyer: He had a few drinks when he went to say good-bye to Miss Tobin. The Magistrate said that he was satisfied accused stole tho watch. Accused was remanded for sentence until to-day.
