WAIKATO MEETING COMMENCES Favourites Win Five Events— Transformer takes Storey i Memorial—Big Sprint to Kingfield—Paddon Proves his Worth—Beau Cavalier’s Condition Tells in Steeples. Special to “Chronicle.” HAMILTON, April 30. The Waikato Racing Club’s meeting opened to-day in fine weather. The going was in good order but a bit soft along the back. The totalisator turnover was £24,178 10s, a decrease of £5373 10s compared with the returns for the first day at last season’s autumn fixture. Some interference took place in the Storey Memorial when the field was three furlongs from home. It is alleged that Master Doon interfered with Mosaic. The stewards found that Mosaic’s rider contributed to the interference. No action was taken. In the Bereseourt Handicap Tinkoa and Aliss Comet fell. It was found that Tinokoa got on the heels of the horses in front and came down accidentally Laxly Spalpeen Comfortably. There was very little separating Lady Spalpeen, Archibald and Gold Rep in the betting on the Frankton Hurdles. Lady Arch was the early pacemaker running out of the straight from Wilts' shire, Scot Free, West Abbey, Slump, Archibald and Lady Spalpeen. Along the back Lady Spalpeen went to the front and was first into the straight, where she was followed at intervals by To Tahi, Slump, Kamehameha, West Abbey and Lady Arch. Nothing had a chance with Lady Spalpeen in the run home and she won comfortably by four lengths. Slump showed improved form to get second, three lengths in front of Te Tahi, next to finish being Wiltshire, Kamehameha, Wedding March, Lady Arch, Gold Rep. Favourite in a Big Field. A mob of thirty saddled up for the Trial Handicap and Catapult was sent out a warm favourite with Whaka King . also well supported. A fine start saw : Lucy Glitters jump out smartly, beingfollowed by Atapai, Master Mind, Te , Waka, Arinagour, Catapult and Micrometer. Crossing the top Master Mind - moved up and was first to turn for : home, but once straightened up the : favourite closed on the leaders and got up to win by half a length from Royal , Doulton, who finished too strong for Master Mind and Atapai, both right up. Then came Te Waka Whaka King, Catclaw, Day Rose, Red Comet. Captain Cobham was bracketed with the winner and Micrometer with the 1 second horse. Speechless Wins Nicely. Nine started in the Juvenile Handicap, Speechless being £lB2 better sup- ? ported than Standfast, with High Tide also heavily backed. At the start 1 Adoree swung round and lost her rider and Kerry dance stood on the mark. Speechless was first away from Stand- : fast, Whakarite and High Tide, but : after going a couple of furlongs Carlaris went to the front and showed . the way into the straight from Whaka- ; rite, Standfast, Speechless, Auriculus and High Tide. In the run home Speechless came with a well-judged run and won by three-quarters of a length from Carlaris, with Standfast half a ' length away, third. Whakarite was fourth and High Tide and Ariculus 1 next. Transformer Again. Quincoina and True Blood were withdrawn from the Storey Memorial Cup, , Pegaway and the Hipo-Mint Leaf bracket disputing favouritism, the latter being entrusted with £25 more. The start was a perfect one. Day Guard , led out of the straight, being followed by Master Doon, Hipo, Mosaic, Baliachulish, Barometer and Pegaway, the last pair being Lord Star and Mint Leaf. Running past the six furlongs Day Guard still held command, and was still there at the home turn. Right on his heels were Master Doon, Barometer, Hipo, Mosaic, Lord Star and Queen Arch. A furlong from the judge Master Doon was in front but then Trans- ; former came along with an irresistible run and beat him by half a length. Mosaic was only a neck away, third, next to finish being Queen Arch, Mint Leaf, Gold Jacket, Hipo, Day Guard and Barometer. Paddjon Outclasses the Field. Of the twenty-one starters in the Beerescourt Hack £l9 separated Tino-; koa, Festina Lente and Paddon on the . totalisator and there was a good drop to Bright Dawn. Rahepoto was the first to become conspicuous, being followed by Winsome Boy, Abbey Day, Adjuster, Constellation and Bright Dawn. Crossing the top Bright Dawn took charge and led into the straight from Ramblin' Kid, Winsome Boy, King Arch, Cantab and Rahepoto. At the furlong post Bright Dawn retained the advantage but then Paddon put in his claim and outclassed the field, scoring easily by four lengths from Bright Dawn. A big outsider in Ramblin’ Kid | was a neck away, third, and the next | to cross the line were War Officer, Abbey Day, Constclintion, Rahepoto, Thurnrosae, Winsome Boy and Cantab.

Tinokoa and Miss Comet fell and the jockeys were slightly injured. Beati Cavalier’s Steeples. Beau Cavalier was favourite in a sixhorse race for the Linley Steeplechase and Kendal was the, only other backed. The contest was confined to three of the starters, Beau Cavalier, Kawa and Pendennis being in the van the first time round, after which Kawa dropped out of the running. The favourite had a slight advantage over Pendennis at 1 the last fence and won by a length and a-half from Pendennis. Hazleburn was twenty lengths away and Kendal (who lost several lengths at the start) fourth. Kingfield Wins the Sprint. The President’s Handicap drew eighteen runners, Kingfield being a better favourite than Nancy Lee and Oration. Delightment and Oration began very quickly but when they settled down Kingfield had charge from Nancy Lee and Flying Juliet. As they commenced to swing into the home stretch Flying Juliet had a half-length advantage over Kingfield and King Lu, with Nancy Lee, Ned Kelly, Dan Quin and Royal Blood following. Once straightened up the favourite quickly collared Flying Juliet and went on to win by a length from Flying Juliet, with Nancy Lee half a length further off. Archeno was fourth and Delightment, King Lu, Dan Quin, York Abbey and Arch Opal next. King Smock by a Head In the concluding event Hyde Park was solidly supported and King Smock and Bright Knight were evenly backed. The favourite began best and piloted the field along the back and into the straight where Bright Knight. Athenry, Rarangi, Prince Abbey, Quincoma and Wenday were close, up, the last pair being King Smock and Peter Maxwell. The favourite was the first beaten and a furlong off the post Bright Knight looked a certain winner when King Smock came along and overhauled Bright Knight to win by a head. Quincoma was a moderate third and passionate was fourth. FULL DETAILS. Frankton Hurdles.—l Lady Spalpeen, 9.2 (J. Holland) 1, 5 Slump, 9.1, 2, 6 Te Tahi, 9.0, 3.
