WHEN WINTER COMES

CURTAIN FALLS ON AUTUMN RACING MANAWATU AND WAIKATO MEETINGS MARK CLOSE OF SEASON GOOD HELDS AND KEEN SPORT The end of April may be said to mark the fall of the curtain on the flat-racing season in the Dominion, though a couple of minor meetings yet remain to he held. On Saturday the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting was brought to a conclusion and a feature of the gathering was the close finishes in the events and the success of outsiders. The Waikato Racing Club’s autumn fixture also commenced at the Te Rapa course and at this meeting five of the eight events were won by outsiders. The concluding day will be on Wednesday and when the Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay fixtures are held, winter racing will hold sway.

THRILLING FINISHES MANAWATU MEETING CONCLUDES Clarinda and Mireusonta Win the Double-Joy King Beats Gascony in Stakes— Tight Finishes and Outsiders Prevail. i Bv 1 •Kestrel.’’ The Manawatu Racing Club ’s autumn meeting was brought to a conclusion on Saturday in fine but cold weather. A shower of rain fell shortly after, the fourth race but did not last long. Ihe attendance was larger than on the opening day, as the totalisator turnover indicated. However, there was another drop in the total of investments. £25,011 being handled, as against £30,190 last year. Over the meeting betting operations showed a decrease of £18,855 over last rear, the respective figures for 192/ and 192 G being £45,264 and £64,119. As this represents a decrease of 28 per cent, it would be wise for the club to deviso some means of arresting the decline and tho introduction oi a tenshilling totalisator is one suggestion that has been proffered. During the day there were some remarkablv dose finishes, particularly that in the Borough Handicap, when six horses finished almost abreast, but in each instance Mr W. P. Russell, who was in the judge’s box, was prompt and accurate in his decisions. The handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys, must be accorded a due measure of praise for his work in bringing the fields together. Tor the third time within a week, the winning double was provided by one stable, in this case Mr R. A. McKenzie, owner of the Great Autumn Handicap winner, Piuthair, providing the responsible pair, Clarinda and Mireusonta. As Mr McKenzie is also a steward of the Manawatu Club, his success was doubly popular. Joy King’s victory in the Manawatu Stakes also won applause. Elvaette’s Hurdles. Proceedings commenced with the Karere Hurdles for which fourteen faced the starter, and the bracket, Brigadier Bill-Omahu. was again made favourite. Kalakaua and Brigadier Bill were the early leaders, followed by Inferno, Hautawa, Santonio, Omahu and Vexatious. Kalakaua led over the fence into the straight the first time with Inferno and Santonio next. Brigadier Bill clouting the battens and dropping back to sixth. Down the back stretch Kalakaua still held the lead but Comedy Prince was alongside him, Elvaette just behind and Vexatious, Brigadier Bill and Bonny Rill next. Kalakaua was first to turn for home but in the run to the judge Elvaette and Comedy Prince asserted themselves and the former went on to win by a length and a-half. Brigadier Bill was two lengths away and Kalakaua, Sottana, \ exatious, and Bonny Rill were next. Rising Star Again. The large field of nineteen paraded for the Lock wood Handicap in which Hathor carried £542, Popoil £360 and Rising Star £348, while Waicuilus, Partaga and Kalos each carried £316. Prom a goud start Berintiiia was soon in the lead from Thomond, Waicuilus, Hathor, Rising Star and Partaga and increased her advantage going out of the back stretch well clear. The sister to Civility was first to turn for home, with the field bunched behind her, but compounded in the final stages and Rising Star got through to win by a neck from Partaga. Waicuilus was a head behind Partaga and .Kalos close up with Manly, Hathor, Popoff and Mon Mint next. Clarinda’s Narrow Win. In a good even field of twelve in the Tamatete Handicap, Merry Damon made most appeal, being £129 better backed than Mandane, with a drop of £2OO to Yoma. They moved off together and Pita was first to show out from Scotch Mixture, Vertigern, Clarinda, Merry Damon, Royal Divorce, Novar and Ngata, with Mandane in the rear. As they ran down the back stretch Pita was three lengths clear of Vertigern, Scotch Mixture, Clarinda, Merry Damon and Royal Divorce, but as they turned for home Clarinda was within striking distance of the leader, followed by Ngata, Yoma, Royal Divorce and Mandane. Clarinda and Yoma had a great

! set-to in the run to the judge, the former prevailing by a short head. Mani dane was a length and a-half away, ' closely followed by Ngata, Merry Day, ’ Scotch Mixture, Merry Damon, Novar, ; Pita and Royal Divorce. Bevis Pay a Price Polyphemus was seized on as the ■ i• 1 goods” in the Stonyhurst but a big outsider in Bevis prevailed i lin the finish, with the favourite i I seventh. Miss Hupana. Buoyant and • Ngawati were quickest to move but • ■ Deluge assumed the lead when they ! reached the course proper, with Lady Bentinck,* Ngawati, Star Area and Polyphemus next. Miss Hupana turned for homo ahead of Deluge, Lady Bentinck. Ngawati. Bevis and Polyphemus, with Pcneus coming fast. Sev- ! oral of thorn participated in a stirring ! finish Bevis getting the decision by ■ ■ half a head from Peneus, with Vivo a } head away. Next to finish were De- I Inge, Miss Hupana, Ngawati and Poiy-1 phemus. Joy King’s Stakes Victory. Only a quartette paraded for the ! Manawatu Stakes in which Rcremoana ; had to concede Gascony 241 b. Even at: this difference in the weights the crack, miler was £lB4 better backed than i Mr Lowry’s gelding, with Joy King • , within £7O of the topweight. They : moved off to a walking up start, Gas- 1 cony, on the rails, setting out to make ■ the pace warm from the jump out, with : Joy King next, followed by Tukia and ■ Reremoana. This order was maintained ; out of the back stretch and round the , * turn for home, but as they straighten- i ’ ed up Joy King ranged up alongside • ! Gascony, a couple of lengths ahead of i Rcremoana and Tuka. Though Gascony ; battled it out Joy King had it on him j in the final stages and beat him home ■ by three-quarters of a length. Two ■ lengths away was Reremoana, with Tukia a neck further back. In a Class of His Own. Great Charter, who had put up a good showing in the Sires’ Produce Stakes on Thursday, was best backed in the Cloverlea Nursery Handicap, : carrying £2lB more than Lady Limond, ; with, a £2OO drop to Sarchee. The issue ■ was never in doubt for the son of King 1 John and En Parole jumped out smarti ly, led from end to end, and won with i his head in his chest by five lengths. ■ Tn the early stages Vigilance, Callanmore and Sarchee followed the leader, j but at the entrance to the straight Sarchee was alongside Vigilance, Lady I Limond and Callanmore following. SarI ehce secured second money, by a neck from the improving Lady Limond, while Vigilance was next to finish. A Stirring Finish. Crown Area’s win on Thursday was 1 impressive enough to lead the public j to send him out better backed than Benzora in the Borough Handicap, but j once again investors were badly knocki ed back. Archeen and Good Sport were slow to move out and Mireusonta i was quickly in the lead from Lieinins. . Benzora, First Acre, Moepai and I Orchid. Mireusonta was first to turn ’• for home with Decoy Bird and Licinius, ! together, next and Benzora, Frst Acre ,; and Crown Area all in the fighting line. ! They swept down on the judge almost . I abreast and six went across the line with heads between them. Mireusonta catching the official’s eye first, followed by First Acre, Crown Area, Decoy Bird, Benzora and Standard in that order. Archeen was next. The Price of the Meeting. Cohesion and Break o’ Day declined their engagements for the Adderston Handicap, with which the meeting con- ’ eluded, and of the nineteen starters the ;, best backed were the bracket, Orazone and Barryanda. Capitulaton and Superb King. Manly, Hymestrason. Lin Arling- ’ ton, Gaidant, Mister Gamp, Henna and Orazone was the order out of the straight, and when they ran down the ‘ back stretch Manly was still in the lead from Hymestrason, Lin Arlington 1 and Gardant. At the turn for home Lin Arlington was just ahead of Inoe, Manly and Gardont, but in the run to the judge the last-named drew away to win by two lengths, with Henna, two : , lengthh away, and Mister Gamp next. », Capitulations, Lin Arlington and Man* ! dane followed in that order.
