“MAY BE WAR”
WHAT OF SOUTH AFRICA? NATIONALIST’S FORECAST CAPETOWN, April 27. A Nationalist back-bencher, Air Oost ; who was General de Wet’s right-hand man in the rebellion, surprised the Legislative Assembly to-day by forecasting war in the near future bc> tween Britain and Russia. Recent Russian actions, he declared pointed that way. Everything showed that a war spirit, prompted by fear, was abroad. Its declaration would lead to the blocking of the Suez Canal while the Cape would be a strategic point, so he demanded to know what South Africa would do if called on to defend any section of the coast. He suggested tho creation of a force of seaplanes as the only solution, and appealed for the arming of men, especially near the borders. Air I’earce (Labour), following, said a defence force wou/d be ridiculous if it had to defend South Africa against a European or Asiatic nation.
