COTTON GROWING

OUTLOOK FOB AUSTRALIA. LONDON, April 26. A substantial increase in the quantity of cotton marketed in Britain last year is shown when totals are compared with those for 1925. The annual report of the British Cot-ton-growing Association gives the value of last year’s market turnover as £3,400.000, which is said to be a record. Experience has proved that British machinery for cotton is in every way the best, the report states. The outlook for production at Kenya, South Africa, is stated to bo encouraging, whilst in Southern Rhodesia it can be made a highly profitable proposition. “But,” adds the report, “it is not an economical proposition in Australia, on a large scale with hired labour, although Queensland can produce cotton of excellent quality. 77 The report declares that there is no reason to doubt that the African native can produce cotton in competition against the United States.
