SOUTH MAKIRIKIRI DANCES [ From the “ Chronicle’s " Special Correspondent. ] During last winter the dances held at Runnymede shed proved very popular with town and country people. Mr A. Stuart has again generously allowed his shed to be used and the dance committee has arrangements will in hand for the opening dance at an early date. The proceeds from the dances, as last winter, will be used for school improvements. A CHAMPION SHOT Mr C. A. Rolfe, of Marton, won the Palmerston North Gun Club’s Championship with a possible. Mr Rolfe receives a live guineas gold modal, £3 7s in cash, and a valuable trophy desides. Mr Rolfe was also a member of the Palmerston North team which has won the C.A.C. cup eight times in succession in two seasons, the other members are Peter Meehan, P. Meehan, A. Thompson, J. Donald, E. Browne, and 8. Seifert and when they defeated Hutt Valley team at Palmerston on Saturday the team was only 12 points off the possible that has been put on by 7 men, FLOWER SHOW An event that is creating a good deal of interest amongst Horticulturists is the chrysanthemum show to be held on Thursday and Friday of next week in the Marton Town Ball. There have been numerous applications for schedules from outside exhibitors and there is every indication of a good show of blooms. The committee is at present busy providing goods for the different stalls and on each evening an attractive programme will be staged at the entertainment. MARTON GOLF CLUB Commencing on Saturday next with a sweepstake trophy competition, a series of interesting contests will be held by Marton Golf Club on the local Jinks. COLTS CRICKET CLUB The annual meeting last evening of the Colts Cricket Club was presided over by Mr R. Keys. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President Mr G. Captain’s P„eport The captain’s report stated: “Occupying the premier position in the championship right up to a fortnight before the season closed, we were robbed of the championship by Porewa, the established country club. Sustaining only one defeat in the first round aiiid that by Porewa in December, we were in a commanding position for the Manley Association Challenge Cup. However, fate was not so kind to us in the second and final round and we were defeated by Porewa (four times) and Hunterville (once). Our uneven batting undoubtedly lost us the honour of being champion team. MARTON COURT At the Magistrate’s Court at Marton to-day before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., the following cases were dealt with:— Charles Moore, for being drunk on Turakina railway station was fined ss. For riding a motor cycle without a license F. Shapleski was fined £1 and costs. J. Mair was fined 5s and costs 10s for riding a cycle without a light. For allowing cows to wander on public roads R. Ledlngham was fined 10s and costs JOs. For failing to attend annual training comp A. G. Signal was fined £5 and costs. A. J, Whitehouse was fined £5 and 1 costs for driving a motor car through I Turnkina at an excessive speed. Kenzie was charged with (1) riding a motor cycle Without an efficient muffler, (2) riding m a dangerous manner, (3) and with riding a motor cycle which was unlicensed. He was fined £2 and costs on each of the three charges. F. Shapleski, for driving a. motor cycle in a manner dangerous to the public was fined £2 and 10s costs. Licensing Breach R. Barlow (licensee) and AV. Ross (barman) (Mr M. C. Fenwicke) were charged with supplying liquor to two natives who were under the age of 21 years. Constable Thompson conducted the case on behalf of the police. Francis Rcwai and Abraham Gotty stated that they had called at the hotel asked for drinks and were served by the barman Ross. Ross stated that tile two natives called for drinks and he told them there was nothing doing and did not serve them. Other witnesses supported this. His Worship said the evidence showed that the boys had been served with drink, and he did not believe a word of the defence. Ross was fined £lO and Barlow £l.
