’■ WANGANUI CYCLING CLUB NESBITT’S MOTOR-PACED RECORD SPEARS WINS MATCH RACES £ There was a very large attendance at Cook’s Gardens last evening, when ’• the Wanganui Cycling Club staged a . meeting, assisted by (( Rob ’ ’ Spears, one of the world’s finest riders, Ja*ck Henderson, New Zealand track cham- . pion, and H. W. Nesbitt, motor-paced specialist. The meeting was a very ‘ successful one from every point o* view and some fine finishes were wit- - nessed. ’ Features of fhe cycling were the fige riding of Spears in scratch races and r Harcourt in the handicap events, while I in the motor-paced event a new 3 and North Island record was set by f Nesbitt. Spears, a tall and powerful rider, had little difficulty in defeating Jack b Henderson in two straight match races. “ Henderson was indisposed, but he faced his task manfully throughout. » In the handicap events Harcourt, a ’ young rider from Hamilton, won everything he started in. His form was " excellent and he should take a high e place when he gains more experience. Nesbitt gave an exhibition of motor paced cycling —a style of sport rarely seen in Wanganui. Nesbitt, without - going at top speed, covered one mile and 20 yards in 1 min. 45sec. and broke the existing record by five - seconds. Enjoyable music was provided dining the evening by the Queen Alexandra Band. Results:— Open mile handicap—First heat: Harcourt 90yds 1, Henderson (Christchurch) ser. 2, R. Spears scr. 3. The most notable among the many fine individual performances in the finials of the- All Indian Olympic sports at , Eden Gardens, Calcutta, was that of ; Hall, who won the quartcr-mile in 51 j 1-10 seconds, beating the Far East re- ( cord of 51.6 seconds. j The meeting represents the culmination of a series of sectionlal competitions held all over India; so that the , winners may be considered India’s finest athletes, from whom will be chosen the teams to represent India at the ninth Olympiad at Amsterdam. It has been decided not to send a team to the Far Eastern championships at Shanghai.
