J A match was played on Saturday last between representatives of the Ohakune Club and Ruapehu Private Club on the latter’s lawns at the June tion, resulting in a decisive victory for Ruapehu. The Ruapehu Club was for tunate in having a player of such skill as Mr H. A. Penn—an erstwhile New Zealand champion—who has lost none of the art of the game. Following are the scores:—Singles— Mr Penn 26 v. Airs Cronin 19; Mrs Cole 26, v. Mrs Fergusson nil; Airs Johanson 26 v. Airs Cranston 23; Airs Cole 26 v. Airs Curtis 14. Doubles.—Airs Cole and Air Penn 26 v. Alesdames Cronin and Fergusson 11; Airs Johnson and Mrs Cole 26 v. Alesdames Cranston and Curtis 9. Several of the King Country clubs have amalgamated their interest in the purchase of a cup to be competed for during the season, and a ballot for the first holders resulted in Te Kuiti being successful. The clubs who are eligible to compete are: Otorohanga. Te Kuiti, Taumarunui, Raetihi and Ruapehu. The enthusiasm of members of the Ruapehu Club has found expression in an effort to obtain a suitable playing area. At present the club is using the private lawns owned and prepared by Air Alurdic, which are rather small for the membership offering. GENERAL NEWS The excursion train to Waitomo carried a full complement of passengers on Sunday, and approximately 600 visited the caves (luring the afternoon. Notwithstanding the fact that a number travelled long distances to join the train, all expressed themselves as being more than compensated by the wonderful sights to be seen—particularly in the Waitomo and Aranui Caves. Representatives of the Taihape Bowling Club will try conclusions with the local club for the Rangitikei Shield this morning, and will play Raetihi in the afternoon. The Ohakune Club will be represented by the following rinks: Lightband, Annison, Tozer. Eaton, Richardson, Curran, Campbell, Havler. Advantage has been taken of the most favourable weather and conditions for climbing by mountaineering parties during the past week or two. and the mountain hut has been constantly in occupation.
