BATA GARDEN PARTY [ From the “ Chronicle's ” Special Correspondent. ] The Rata Plunket Society’s garden party is to be held on Airs A. H. Rhodes ’ property at Rata to-morrow afternoon. Plain and fancy goods stalls will be laden with useful and ornamental articles. A dance will be held in the Rata H'all in the evening. “WILD HORSE MESA” “Wild Horse Afesa” is an action picture, from the story of Zane Grey. Everyone knows that the Western stories and pictures of Zane Grey are the best of the type that are to be seen. Zane Grey is a master of the romance of the West, of its thrills, its daring, and its people. They are clean, wholesome thrilling pictures and the best of them all is “Wild Horse Afesa.” The box plan is at Mogridge’s. SWIMMING CARNIVAL Splendid entries have been received for the Alarton Swimming carnival tonight in the Alunicipal Baths. Since the last carnival a number of alterations have been carried out at the baths which should be greatly appreciated by the club’s patrons. Accommodation to seat an additional 300 people has been erected and six extra electric lights have been installed. In view of the extra expenditure incurred by the Borough Council and the swimming club it is hoped that there will bo a large attendance this evening. The carnival commences at 7.30. Norman Dowsett, ex-New Zealand .100 yards champion and Wanganui champion will be a competitor.

MABTON BOWLING CLUB On Saturday afternoon Alarton Bowling Club enjoyed a visit of six rinks of bowlers from Oroua (Feilding). The local green, although showing the effect of the excessive heat of the past week, was in splendid order. The local rinks were in form and notched victories in every instance. The scores are given, below, local men being mentioned first:—Brtibyn, Boldsman, J. F. Allies and Duck 22 v. Hope, Andrews, Oakley and Brewer 16; Gow, Lourie, Gould and Ferens 16 v. BOROUGH COUNCIL The Borough Council met last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr F. Purnell) and Crs. A. H. Bill, W. Price, B. J. Moore, J. Mogridge, J. D. Gorrie, G. B. Gregory, J. A. Bush and H. Y. Cameron. The district engineer of New Zealand Railways wrote asking under what conditions the Council was prepared to supply gas to Alarton Railway Station. Agreed to under the same conditions as last year. Improvements to the approach to Lower Follett Street, kerbing and chan nelling, footpath, trees, and crossings for vehicles.—The Mayor reported that the work be carried out subject to certain conditions. His action was confirmed.

The Marton Cycle Club was granted permission to use the Park on February 16 for a cycle meeting on the usual conditions.

The Alarton Fire Brigade wrote, stating that Afr. S. Henderson, a married man, had been appointed custodian of the station.—The Council expressed disapproval of the present position. J. J. Davies applied for a secondhand dealer’s license, which was granted subject to the usual police report. Warren Strombom and several others applies for permission to put in two more water troughs on their properties on 'Tutaenui Road. It was decided that the Council could not undertake the work at present, but would consider it later.

W. S. Nicol complained that he could not get water to cool his milk on Saturday last.—Referred to engineer. The secretary of the A. .and P. Association forwarded a cheque for £ll 3s being 10 per cent on gate takings at annual show.—Received.

Tiiv uvi r.s. tr (Mr W. B Brunt) reported: I have remetalled with screened pit metal 14 chains of Pukepapa Boad, 16 chains of Hawkestone Bond and portions of Oiroa and Pipae Streets. All gorse on the roadside, Upper Tutaenui Waterworks reserve, has been grubbed out. Nine water leaks have been attended to. Four sewerage connections have been pul in. Ten water connections have been made. I have excavated and laid 72 chains of 3-inch water main on Golding’s Line and French, Kitchener and I’u- j rakau Streets. The reservoir is holding 21ft. 2in. of water and the embankments are in good order. Following a report from a special committee, it was decided to recommend the incoming council to give favourable consideration to a tender for installing a heating system in the Town Hall. Municipal Election. A strong deputation of townspeople and business representatives waited on the Council, and asked the Alayoi%and councillors to offer themselves for reelection at the forthcoming municipal election. Mr F. R. H. Brice headed the deputation and referred in eulogistic terms to the services of the coun-

cillors, making special reference to their successful administration, under which the work of the borough had been conducted out of the Council’s revenue. Afr H. H. Kichardson echoed the sentiments expressed by Mr Brice, and paid a tribute to the Mayor’s businesslike work at the head of the Council.

The Afayor intimated that he would offer himself for re-election if it was the wish of the ratepayers, and the other councillors, with the exception , of Crs. Bill and Alogridge, took the same view. COURT LITTLE JOHN There will be a general meeting of Court Little John (A.0.F.) to-night, when District Secretary A. Travers will be in attendance. MARTON A. & P. ASSOCIATION At a largely attended meeting of the general committee last evening, protests were received and upheld in connection with the maiden and pony jumping competitions at the recent show. Mr J. Broad’s resignation from the committee was received with regret. The following donors were thanked: Sir James Wilson £5; Mr R. Barlow, £5.
