RAILWAY PICNIC A SUCCESS [ From the “ Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] Glorious weather prevailed for the Taihape railwaymen 's fifth annual picnic on Mr Walter Williams’ beautiful grounds at Ngaurukeku on Friday. A special train, consisting of fifteen carriages, conveyed the party which numbered about 750. On arriving at the grounds everyone was delighted to see the excellent arrangements, made for their comfort, the children being specially well catered for with swings, games, and an ice-cream stall, which was the most popular spot with the children. All branches of sport were catered for, and a first-class programme provided. The running events were very interesting, and provided some very close finishes, Derbridge and D. Riordan being the star performers. Mr W. 8. Glenn, M.P. for Rangitikei, was present and gave valuable assistance to the committee during the day. The Taihape Brass Band was in attendance and rendered music, which was greatly appreciated by all present. During the afternoon Mr G. Wilsher on behalf of the committee, thanked Mr Williams for his generosity in allowing them the use of his grounds, also all those who donated prizes ana assisted towards the sucoes of the picnic. He also thanked the Railway Department for granting them the special train, a privilege which wa~s greatly appreciated by the branches of the service. The following was the committee: —Mr G. Wilsher (chairman), Mr W. Barrowman and Mp W. H. Smith (joint secretaries), Mesrs D. Riordan, J. Cunningham, B. Burrell, W. Farquhar, W. Benfell, J. Kearns, G. Harvey, W. Burton, J. Dripps, C. Harrington, J. Harrington, A. Mack, D. Bailey, W. Bailey, J. Packer and S. Gomby.

In addition to a long programme of races a first-class children’s programme was provided and those who were not successful in catching the judge’s eye were awarded prizes. The picnic party returned to town about 6.30 p.m., everybody voting the picnic to be the best organised and most successful ever held in Taihape.

BOWLING NOTES Th ? weather this week-end was ideal for the bowlers and the green was very fast. The Marsh Cup contest has now concluded by the holders, Ryan and McKnight, 23, withstanding the challenge of Sheldon and Williams, 15. This valuable cup now brcom.es the property of Ryan and McKnight, but they have generously donated it again to the dub on condition that it must be won three times in succession. Silver buttons.—Coutts. Eaton, C. Cherry, J. Mortland, met O'Neil, Williams, Sheldon, Clarinbold. and received a good trouncing by 24 to 13. S. Reid and Hllngworth 18, beat Bartram and O’Neil 16. ST. PATRICK’S DAY SPORTS The St. Patrick’s day sports management committee met on Saturday evening, Mr W. J. Coutts being in the chair. The Queen Alexandra Band was definitely engaged at £6O for the two days and the concert providing there are 20 players and two artists. Mr D. Toms gave a medal for the winner of the maiden running event, but there not being a race of that description on the programme, it was decided to write and ask if it could be given ae a points prize. The judges fo r the athletic events appointed are Messrs H. Dashwood, C. L. Dymock, W. Vernon; referee, Mr H. Hay; timekeeper, Air H. D. Bond; starter, Air C. Cherry. Air C. McDonald was appointed piper for the dancing events on both davs.

Messrs W. Coutts and D. Neagle, the delegates appointed to the conference regarding the proposal that a centre be formed of the N.Z.A.C.U., reported that a meeting was held in Alarton on Thursday night, when it was explained by Air Collingwood that Feilding was at present the centre, but had not done anything for years and he had been carrying on the business as secretary for the N.Z.A.C.U. under the authority of the parent body. It was decided to form a centre to be known as the Rangitikei Centre. The following officers were elected:—President Air W. J. Coutts (Taihape), vice-presi-dents, Messrs F. G. Seddon (Wanganui), A. H. Sims (Turakina); secretary and treasurer, Air J. Collingwood (Wanganui); executive committee, Messrs D. Neagle (Taihape), E. Gibbs (Utiku), Griffen (Alarton), T. Daw kins (Alangaweka), L. E. Smith (Wanganui), J. B. McKnight (Ohingaiti), K. Alartin (Cheltenham), Smith (Putorino), A. Ratcliffe (Rata).

Tenders are to be called separately for luncheon and afternoon tea, fruit, soft drinks and cigarettes, and icecream and sweets.

PLUNKET SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the Taihape branch of the Plunket Society was held on Friday last, when Mrs F. Al. Somerville occupied the chair. Nurse Gray gave a general report of the month which showed 206 babies on tiie roll (including Hunterville). Airs Somerville read a memorial minute in respect to the death of Lady Truby King. Expressions of regret were passed in the death of Mrs Phil lips, of Utiku, who for years had been of great assistance to the Plunket nurse.

Accounts amounting to £l6 Is 6d were passed for payment, and 10s was received in members’ subscriptions.
