SIR THOMAS BEECHAM EXTENSIVE BORROWING. LONDON, October 21. Sir Thomas Beecham, the well-known opera conductor, has been sued for £lO,OOO by a firm of money-lenders. Evidence was given that Sir Thomas Beecham had borrowed £40,000 from money-lenders this year. Sir Patrick Hastings, K.C. (for the money-lenders): “Have you had 152 bankruptcy petitions against you?” Defendant: “I don’t think so.” Sir Patrick Hastings: “I’m told that someone has just beaten you; other wise year’s would be a record.” Defendant admitted that a furniture firm had issued a writ for £lO,OOO, but denied owing the amount.
Judgment was reserved.
