WAITOTARA.

VALEDICTORY. (From the "Chronicle’s’’ Special Correspondent.) A very pleasing gathering took place in the school at Nukumaru on Friday evening last. There was a large attend ance, the. occasion being a send-off to Mr Wi Tairoa, who has been farming there for some years, and who is highly respected by Europeans and Maoris. Mr E. Travers, who presided, had much pleasure, on behalf of the residents of Nukumaru, Kai Iwi and Waitotara, in presenting Wi with a handsome eightday clock, and to Mrs Wi Tairoa a silver teapot. Mr Rimi Whakarau, of Nukumaru, also presented Wi, on behalf of the Rauru Football Club, wth a handsome gold medal. Mr Wi Tairoa, on rising to respond, in a neat speech thanked all kind friends, and said he would look back to the happy times spent in this district. During the first part of the evening musical items and songs were given by Messrs A. Hutchison, Stevenson and Mrs Day. The Katana string band was in attendance, and supplied the music for the dance which followed. Miss Fahey, at the piano, played the extras. An excellent supper was provided. Mr Tairoa has decided to take up farming again at Stony River, in Taranaki.

ACCIDENT. A serious accident to a young man named Jones occurred on Labour Day zit one of the bad corners on the hill near Mr Grove’s. It appears Jones and a mate were on their way from Palmerston to Waveriey races when the collision occurred with the result that Jones had a leg broken. He was conveyed to Palmerston by train. PROHIBITION. On Tuesday evening last Mr Spratr, solicitor, of Hawera, gave an address on the above subject. Mr 11. Grove presided. There was a small attendance on account of the meeting not being advertised. At the conclusion of his address Mr Spratt was accoorded a votj of thanks. After the meeting Mr Parkinson provided supper for the company at Mrs Neilsen’s. WHITEBAIT. There have been some good catches of whitebait here this week, and quite a number of people are to be seen with their nets making for the small creeks along the river bank. SHEARING. The first wool of the season left here to-day. Mr Sam Brewer, of Naiau sheep station, has started. Mr W. Hurley has the bulk of wool carting to do in this district.
