SUCCESSFUL DANCES (From the "Chronicle’s’’ Special Correspondent.) Sports were held at Taumarunui on Labour Day, and the dancing attracted a largo number of competitors from many towns on the Main Trunk. Master Alister McCowan, of Raetihi, was among the competitors, and succeeded in winning two firsts, two seconds and one third prize in the Highland events. At the same meeting Miss Nellie Anderson, of Raetihi, won the King Country championship for Highland Fling. This was a most popular victory, she having w T on the same event on a previous occasion. WESTERN MAORI Sir Maui Pomare made a tour of a large portion of the King Country last week and though in the first instance it was thought that • * many places the natives would not condescend to listen to him it is reported that at most places he received most enthusiastic welcomes. THE ROADS With the recent fine weather the roads of the district are drying up wonderfully, and most of the slips on the back roads are being cleared away. With the exception of a few bumps on the Pipiriki road, this thoroughfare is in good order and it is anticipated that there will be considerable nv tor traffic from the railway to the river this season. The Parapara Road is now receiving attention in the bad places, and it is anticipated that within a couple oi weeks, if the weather keeps fine, the motor service will again be commenced. MOTOR MAIL SERVICE For years the mail to Ruatiti ami Parapara has bceji conveyed by buggy and coach, but rhe contractors (Messr R. R. D°ws n, Ltd.), realising the in' portance of these growing district" and in order to provide them with better service, have put on the road Ford motor bus. This is capable o carrying twelve j sengers and a coi siderable quantity of mails and hq gage. With this service the contrac tors anticipate giving Ruatiti an earl; morning service, and in the summei. passengers could arrive in Raetihi ii time to c»*ch the motor service througl Parpara for Wanganui. POLITICAL Mr F. Langstone has just completed a tour of the Kaitieke district and his committee report that he received good meetings everywhere he spoke.
