THE FROG AND THE OX

(To the Editor)

Sir, —A certain critic in striving to bring the Reform Government into vulg'ar ridicule relates the above-mention-ed fable in its entirety, comparing the Reform Government to the foolish frog of the fable. A more inapt simile would be impossible to imagine; it is not only misleading the public with false accusation, but is so utterly inapt that it is positively silly and childish. But the mention of fables reminds us of a cartoon, referring to Socialism, to be found among Air Peachy’s estate (advertisements, opposite the Post Office. Here we have a most apt simile, the artist taking for his text, the old fable of Sinbad and the Genii which he released from the jar he found upon tho sea coast by uncorking it. In this cartoon the jar is labelled “Pure Socialism.” The • trawn cork is beside it, and rushing from tho mouth of the jar is a volume of poisonous gas which as it rises takes the form of the evil spirit of Anarchy, a dagger in one hand, a revolver in the other. The Socialistic Labour leader (tas the modern Sinbad) stands aghast at the result of his act, exhibiting great terrir, while in the rushing poisonous gas wc find the composition of Anarchy, namely, “Irreligion, covetousness, jealousy, greed, indolence, drink, dishonest-go-siow-labour, strike, strike, strike, 1.W.W., L.L.L., Communism, theft, revolution, murder, hell, etc., etc., etc., the Socialistic Labour leader exclaiming: “Great heaven! what have I done.” The cartoon illustrates the progress of Socialism, its sure result, its final stlage, one proof of which we have in Russia. Here we have something for the electors to seriously contemplate before giving their votes to Labour members, and so bringing irreparable ruin upon this Dominion.—l am, etc., FOB PEACE AND PROSPERITY.
