HENLEY FOUR-OARED RACE WEST AUSTRALIA WINS. HAMILTON JUST BEATEN IN SEMI-FINAL. Received Oct. 25, 5.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 25. Ihe Henley four-oared mile race was held in perfect weather. There was a record attendence. In tho first heat, Hamilton (New Zealand) beat Melbourne by a length and a-half, Banks (Victoria) being thidl. Hamilton started well, and soon had a few feet lead. Athough tho stroke (Sandos) lost his slide immediately after tho start, Hamilton maintained their lead throughout, winning easily. Time, 5.35. In the semi-final, Hamilton drew the north side. West Australia got away first, leading by six feet at the quarter mile. Hamilton sprinted and caught West Australia, gaining a lead of two feet at the three-quarter distance. Both crews finished strongly, West Australia winning in a thrilling finish by two feet. Tho time was 5.40. The spectators gave a great ovation to the crews, some thinking it was a dead heat.
The Hamilton stroke (Sandos) said the crew pulled well, but met their equals, and were just beaten on the post after a great race. West Australia won the final from Rockhampton by a length and a-half.
