SATURDAY’S CYCLE RACE. WON BY S. McCANN OF NEW PLYMOUTH. [Per Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Oct. 24 . A New Plymouth boy, S. McCann, riding on the thirty minutes mark, won yesterday’s round Mount Egmont cycle race by a comfortablo margin. Fifty-six riders faced the starter at New Plymouth, the limit men, who were given, forty minutes’ start, leaving at ten o’clock. The* roads, which for the greater part of the one hundred miles course arc tar sealed, were in good order. Thu weather was also favourable, although during the first forty mile/a along tho coast road to Opunake : a head wind was faced. Great inter- ! est was displayed by the public who ■ lined the roads and streets in all the j villages and towns. •' The scratch men gained very little on the leaders to Opunake. Passing Kaponjra. Brewster (New Plymouth) in the lead, a position he held all i ihe way to Inglewood, which is only ■ eleven miles from home. Two minutes j behind him camo McCann, Yardley, ; Mortlake and Belk, who in the last ' stretch overhauled tho leader, finishing i m the order named with Brewster fifth. ' McCann rode a splendid race, reaching the finishing post at New Plymouth racecourse over five minutes ahead of the next man. Results:—• S.
