AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

A GREAT ACTOR. MOSCOVITCH TO-NIGHT. This evening at the Opera House, Wanganui, will see the first appearance of the world-famous actor-genius, Maurice Moscovitch, and J. C. Williamson’s wonderful supporting company, and the first production of the phenomenally successful four-act drama, “The Outsider,” a tense and virile play which was originally written for this great artist by Dorothy Brandon. This piece is sure to arouse considerable interest in Wanganui, not only among the general public, but particularly so far as Ihe medical profession is concerned. The gripping drama in which the great Russian actor opens in Wanganui this evening is the story of a quack doctor who cured a cripple girl after many distinguished surgeons, including" her father, had failed to alleviate her sufferings. It was claimed by several Melbourne doctors that the play put the medical profession in an unfavourable light, not only by the turn of the plot, but also by the sarcastic dialogue, at the expense of the London surgeons. However, “The Outsider” is not intended to convey any lesson either for or against unlicensed practitioners. “It is merely a play,” explains Mr. Moscovitch, “and should be regarded only as a play.” The Melbourne press entered into the discussion anl many leading articles appeared in the daily papers. Although the play wtas written by a crippled girl about a cripple, it is not at least harrowing or morbid. In fact, to. strong vein of humour runs through the whole piece and it is a fine drama with plenty of opportunities for Mr. Moscovitch. one of the greatest actors to ever visit the Dominion. This artist is a sound and convincing actor, and a mlan of striking personality and ripe experience. His impersonation of Anton Ragatzy stamps him at once a great artist. “The Outsider” will be presented for this night only. To-morrow night will see Maurice Moscovitch in his wonderful impersonation of Shylock, in “The Merchant of Venice,” stated to be one of the, greatest characterisations the world has ever seen. The whole production will be presented on a complete and elaborate scale, embodying the original and new conception of the play by Mr. Moscovitch. It will appeal by its power, its beauty, and its novelty, not only to the Shakespearean enthusiast, but to every patron of the theatre. The box plans arc lat Messrs H. I. .Tones and Son’s. The 5s and 2s 6d tickets can be obtained at the doors to-night. MUNICIPAL PICTURES Owing to the Opera House being otherwise engaged pictures will be suspended until Wednesday evening, when Thomas Meighan in “Tongues of Flame” will be the star attraction. Box plan at H. 1. Jones and Son’s.
