Ho had no difficulty in securing the coveted cup for the fourth year in s’l.ecr, >,]. \t ;ho end r.f last month a party of farmers from Marwclltown, where interest in root competitions is so keen, accompanied by Mr. Deem of the Moumahaki Experimental Farm visited Ngaturi and made an inspection of the crop of mangeD from which Mr. Mitchell’s show roots had been selected. Two weighings of mangels grown from Coopers ’ ‘ ‘ Prizewinner” seed were made in the paddock by Mr. Deem the heaviest of these weighing 139 tons 4 cwt., the average of the two weighings being 121 tons 10 cwt to the acre. The roots had been pulled about a month previous to the weighing, and Mr. Deem expressed the opinion that had the “prizewinners” had been weighed when they were pulled, they would have averaged 130 tons to the acre. All farmers in the district will congratulate Mr. Mitchell on ths wonderful results he has obtained, and also Messrs F Cooper Ltd., from whose seed thess mangels were grown.
