Marshall was present, and in reply to a question said it was proposed only to tax petrol used for motor traffic. Mr. Howie thought it would open the way to all sorts of corruption, as petrol might be purchased for one purpose and used for another. Mr. Marshall said the proposal was that a farmer would give an estimate of the amount of petrol he would use for farming purposes and that amount could be exempted from taxation. AFFORESTATION. A letter was received from the Forestry Department stating that they would continue to sell trees in lots of less than 1000, as it was felt that if the sale of lots of under 1000 was discontinued fully 90 per cent, of the buyers of trees would be affected.
