THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Early Bird.”) The Hawk has been scratched for the Sydney Cup. Waverley nominations are due tomorrow (Wednesday) night. Racing at Trentham on Thursday and Saturday. The N.Z. St. Leger and North Island Challenge Stakes, anl the Thompson Handicap will be decided on Thursday, and the Trentham Gold Cup on Saturday. In Glenross Mr W. McA. Dunean has a fine performer to carry his colours. Glenross impressed very much at Bulls, and the manner in which he won stamps him as a brilliant one.

Successful jockeys at the Rangitikei meeting .were J'. Barry (2), L. G. Morris (2), H. Gray (2), W. S. Bagby (2), M. MeCarten, C. Bracken, R. Reed, J. Dombroski, J. K. Kaan, and H. K. Alexander. Mr J. McCarthy jun., won both the amateur riders’ events.

The positions of the leading jockeys up to date are as follow:—M. McCarten 31, A. Reed 29, H. Gray 29, L. G. Morris 264, J. Barry 26, C. Emerson 28, and C. Reed 23. At the head of the apprentice riders is W. S. Bagby 23, H. Wiggins 22, J. Dombroski 20, and H. E. Ryder 17}.

On the book Snatcher looked a racecourse certainty on the second day at Bulls. In the Cup the Taranaki horse was half a length behind Para, and on the second day Para was called on to concede Snatcher a stone. But the winner turned up in Askari, who was dropped four pounds for a close fourth in the Cup, and the fine price returned was a surprise.

Winning trainers at Rangitikei were F. Tilley (Glenross twice, Para), H. Rayner (Black Cruiser), A. Oliver (Santiago), H. Hickey (Strongholt), J. O. Jones (General Carrington), P. Coffey (Dignity twice), W. H. Johnston (Orchid), F. J. Carmont (Bonny Marion), J. Coyle (Aeriform), M. Williams (Waimatao), T. Lloyd (Askari), W. Pine (Skylight), and T. W. Coleman (Some Red). The Auckland District Committee has remitted the balance of the suspension imposed on the jockey B. Rosen. S. Walls will be riding at the Wellington autumn meeting, where he has been engaged to ride Anxious Moments in the High-weight Handicap. A. J. McFlynn visited Foxton last week and rode the two-year-old Rouex a gallop.

W. H. Jones, the successful apprentice horseman, went to Wellington with Mr G. L. Stead’s horses and will ride Royal Box in the Thompson Handicap. Jones will not wait for the second day at Trentham, but will return to fulfil riding engagements at Pukekohc. Mrs R. B. Stiven is reported to have recently received an offer of 2000gns for the Balboa gelding Baldowa. The horse was not for sale, but had a sale been effected it is thought probable that he would have been a member of a team invading Australia during the winter.

The successful Auckland light-weight, H. Wiggins, will ride Zaragoza and Star Shell on the first day of the Wellington autumn meeting, and will then return north for the Franklin meeting, where he has a number of riding engagements to fulfil. The following track notes are reported from Trentham on Saturday: Glaive ran six furlongs on the tan in 1 min 19 sec.

Laughing Stock went well over half a mile on the grass in 51} sec. Martinique and the jumper in C. Pritchard’s stable cantered once round, increasing the pace down the straight. Vindictive and Bright Eyes worked together over a mile on the grass, run in 1 min 49 sec., the last four furlongs in 564 sec.

Carawock and Jubilance finished together over a half-mile sprint. Ares had the. All Gold and Entre Nons were together over five furlongs, the last halfmile taking 52 sec. En Route, finishing well, ran seven furlongs alone in 1 min 33 sec. A good gallop. Alfort, who looks well, was given a round at a good half-pace. Printemps and Stream finished in front of Backsheesh over six furlongs, run in 1 min 184 sec.

Tradesmen’s Handicap.— Disappointment (McTavish) 1, Arizona Boy 2, Te Hoe 3.

Flying Handicap.—Peter Maxwell (McTavish) 1, Criss Abbey 2, Irish Knight 3.

The two trotting races were won by Hal Chimes and Gold Star. The scratching of Wharfdale left seven starters for the Waimate Cup on Thursday last. Ballymena (ridden by M. MeCarten), carried about twice as much money as The Polymnian, who was slightly better backed than Kilfane, while Palestrina and Kenmore also had plenty of admirers. Kenmore was soon put, showing the way to Kilfane, while three furlongs from home Ballymena headed Kenmore. Racing I round the home turn, AU British re-

tired and Palestrina moved up, turning into the straight just behind Kilfanp and Ballymna. The last named was beaten a hundred yards from the post, and Palestrina, finishing on well, won by a short half-length from Kilfane, with Ballymena nearly a length away and The Polymnian fourth. The winner’s performance was full of merit, and with the sting out of the ground she may get some more money this season. Kilfane is an improving horse, sure to win soon. Ballymena ran a solid race and so did The Polynian, who is backward. Kenmore and AU British cannot stay, while Corn Rigs is not ready. THE OAMARU MEETING KILFANE WINS AGAIN. (Per Press Association.)
