PALMERSTON N., October 28. Francis Joseph Carroll came before a Court-martial io-day charged with desertion. It was shown that after hewas orderei feito camp he went to the far north of Auckland, where he worked on a farm. fliie farmer became suspicious and dismissed Carroll and informed the police. WJien arrested, Carroll gave a fnlse name. Mr. Ongley, who appeared for accused, contended that there was no evidence to prove that Carroll had actually received official notification taiat he had been called up. He also protested' against the waste of public money invclved m the Court-martial, in which fourteen Defence Department officials —greater ■and less—were concerned.
