AN EXCITING ARREST.
CHINESE GLOBE BREAKER
Constables Wilson and O'Donoghue, while on night patrol, had an exciting experience in the early hours of this morning. For some time past Ngan Kee and Co., Chinese fruiterers, at the corner of the Avenue and Guyton St., have had their big gas lamps mysteriously broken. The police have consequently been on the alert, and this morning they discovered a culprit. At 1.20 the door of Wong Chong's shop •.opposite McGruer's) opened quietly, and a dark figure slipped noiselessly along the street. Arrived under Ngan Kee's verandah, the figure paused, and then, evidently satisfied that no witnesses were near, struck one of the big globes. Then, oblivions of the fact that two guardians of the law were approaching, the person smashed another gldbe, and began to move back towards Wong Chong's shop. Only a few steps were made, however, when two electric torches blinded thy marauder, who proved to be Mrs Won^ Chang,, armed with a long iron, roa. In a moment Constables Wilson and O'Donoghue seized her arms, and. despite a struggle, during which the lady tried to bite the constables, they took her to the lock-up. A Chronicle reporter fortunately happened along in time to get the story. Mrs Chong will b? brought before the Court this morning.
