BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The DeputyMayor, Cr. Spriggens (chair) and Crs. McCaui, Harkness, Gower, Sigley, Luxford and Thompson. COMMITTEE REPORTS. Finance. —Printing Balance Sheet: | The Committee has received tenders i'or this work and has accepted the j tender of the "Chronicle" Company. Rates, V.M.C.A.: The application for a remission of the rates on this property has been considered, and as their class of property is not exempted under the provisions of the Rating Act, the Council has no legal authority to grant' any remission. Report .adopted. By-Laws.—The Committee report having completed the work of revising the By-laws and have handed the same to the Borough Solicitor to peruse and complete.—Adopted. Gas. —Re Gas to Kawatiri Avenue: The committee recommend that owing to the present high cost of materials, the Council do not agree to lay this main unless the Cameron Estate will pay £20 toward the cost. —Adopted. Sanitation.—Re Destruction of Rats: We recommend that the Borough Engineer take all possible steps to destroy rats at the rubbish depot. Also that the Council offer a bonus of Id each for rats delivered at the Borough yard.—Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. Ratepayers' Association. — The Wanganui Ratepayers' Association wrote asking the Council if it would j have the Ridgway Street tram- line ; extended to Nixon Place and suggesting that waiting cars and trailers be run along this line to avoid obstructing the traffic.—Referred to Tramways Committee. The Association also asked that the Taxi stand be shifted to the northern side of St. Hill Street. —Referred to Works Committee, together with a recommendation from the Association re shelter shed for taxi-drivers. Condemnation Certificates. —A report was received from Dr. Sidney Smith re certain houses which he had inspected, recommending alteration In some cases and total demolition in others. —It was decided to take the necessary steps to carry out Dr. Smith's recommendations.' Durie Hill Elevator.— Mr. E. Crow asked, on behalf of the syndicate interested, for permission to proceed with the work of constructing the Durie Hill elevator.— Permission was granted on the Engineer's assurance that all precautions appeared to have been taken.
