SHEARERS' DEMANDS.

OPPOSITION IX WAVERLEY

CHARACTERISED AS ABSURD

(From our Travelling Reporter.) WAVEJILEY, April 28. The new demands recently put forward by. the New Zealand Shearers' and Woolshed Hands' Union has causod eansiderable interest in the Waverley district. Though the farmers are not opposed to anything fair and roaeonable, cither in the rate of remuneration or conditions of employment, they fl.ro certainly up against the demands issued. According to Mr "Dickie, they do not object to 20s per hundred (an increase of sixpence) for TOachineshearing, or 22s Cki for blades, but the demand far Is 6d an hour for time lost, not starting on date, etc., ho characterised as being ridiculous. To his mind they were all absurd—to shearem and employers alike. In view, of theso demands, a representative gathering of sheen formers was held at 1 Waverley, Mr H. Dickie presiding, ana after the question h.ad been fuily discussed it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Alf. Symes, seconded by Mr. "W. Watkins, "That th«> sheep farmers of this district protest against the newdemands, and put forward the opinion I that the old award is considered satisfactory ; also that no now award bo made for a shorter term than three I years."
