RAETIHI NOTES.

A public meeting was held at the Town Hall, Raetihi, to consider the advisability of forming a debating club, a fair number attending. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Williamson, seconded by the Rev. Martin, that it be named the Raetihi Literary and Debating Club, and it was decided to hold the meetings fortnightly. The appointment of officers was then proceeded with, and Mr John Punch was elected president. Vice-presidents, Revs Martin and McKenzie; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. Campbell; management committee, Messrs Harris and Hird, with power to add. The subscription was fixed at 2s 6d for gentlemen, and ladies free. The secretary and president were asked to wait upon the County Council to obtain the use of the Chamber for meetings. The date for the first debate was fixed for September 7th at 7.30, and the subject fixed upon was: "That women are intellectually equal to men." Leaders and speakers were decided by lot as follows: Affirmative, Messrs Avery (leader), Punch, Williamson, Vine, Campbell, and Gibson; negative, Messrs McKenzie (leader)* Hird, Harris, Martin, and Fryer. . . •
