HALCOMBE NOTES.

,• - " =-: ♦'" ' = — '■* \ (From Our Own Correspondent.) The end of this month has boen ushered out with glorious weather, and to anyone viewing the 1 lovely surroundings of rhis township it seems almost in-erpdible.io-ihink that such an inviting locality should be almost deserted. With eveiy recommendation as to lovely sites for residences, natural advantages for drainage, good land, healthiness and last, but not least, the lowest rates being asked for the land, it is most strange, indeed that the place is so severely left alone. . There are no •bogeys "here to keep nervous pebpla away, but such, alas, i£ the fact and Halcombe certainly does not progress with the times. We must not, however, lose heart, but take comfort in the old adage: "Everything comes to him that waits " (if he only wait long enough). . We regret to have to announce that last Saturday Mr McQuilkan, Cadet, in the railway staff here, received the sad news of the death of his father, who resides near Napier. The Foresters are busily engaged in making alterations to their hall, and making ready for theiriiannual ball on the 11th prbx., Messrs Lynam and. Claphara having secured the contract and will have everything in ship shape order for the important event. The Debating Society held a meeting last Wednesday and it is a pleasure to note that the interest in this, direction is steadily increasing. , Halnombo is entirely in sympathy with Wangariui as to the much regretted loss of two such well known and respected citizens a« Messrs Whitlock and A. D. Willis, both of whom had personal friends here, and the gaps will !>£» hard ...to fill. To the relatives of both we wish to express much symoa-:-:thy. i- vS *. . ; - : . rr / ; vV?
