(From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, September 15. Mr. Daniells, who has been appointed .Town Clerk, takes up his duties on th© 22nd ir-irtacit.
The Postal Departmenti, at ths request of the Chamber of Comraerce, will auva a receiving-box placed: at t!he rail-way citation, to be cleared at 9 a.m., 12.50,. 2.30, and 7 p.m. Also, one in Wellington road, to be cleared at 7.50 a-m., 11 a-.ißi., 4.20 p.m. The Canterbury "Times," referri»g. to the Marton races, says : "Bmfly the meeting was veil managed and enjoyable. Th* clubs on the West Coast are fortura/te in their executive officers', and! in Mr. G-. F. Bishoip the Marton Club baa a most efficient seonetary, who has an able assistant in Mr. Slad'dton-."' "Advance," in tie "Nevv Zealand Times," pays Mr. Bishop a sin.>lar compliment, but considers the etattin,g and judging oo<uld be improved' en. About 60 coupi'es attended the annual Fire Brigade bail on Friday last, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, thu floor and musio (gratuitously supplied by the Band) being excellent. The supper arrangements were entrusted to a- committee of ladies, and were all that could 1 desired. The support .given to this institution should have been far greater than it was, but the small attendance was attributed to the great number of socials that have been held this winter. Very little will be made out of the function, although tiba Ba.nd supplied the music 4jree, the Royai'i Rifles gave a rebate of StJs. on the hall, Mr. Nicoil a substantial reduction in-lub account, and Mr. W. R Snellgrove his services.and the loan of nia piano free. A cause of annoyance to a.l dancers at the Drill Hall during the p-us season has been the number of "loafers' waiting •an 'Opportunity to "sneeifc" in both to the dancing and supper room. Friday niglit w-as no exception, and quite a dozen young men in steady employment waited for hours for an oportaudty to regain themselves. Mr. Voyce, of the Oreti Cycle Works, Wanganui, was in town yesterday with % motor cycle, and) a considerable amount cif interest was manifested in the machine. The cycle, which weighs only 80 lbs., appeared perfect in iita runningl, and Mr. Voyce' stays he has as yet had! no trouble whatever with it. On« or two local cyclists mounted it, and were much pleased with it. .
