RECEPTION OF THE BROTHERS. The Catholics of Wanganui turned up in largo numbers last night for tho purpose of formally welcoming the Marist Brothors, who arrived yosterday to takp charge of tho lafcoly established boys' school. The welcome took place in the newly erected building at tho roar of the Convent* the large schoolroom being taxed to its uttermost space. There must havo bsnn fully 300 of the congregation prosont, and as the majority were adults tho proceedings woro thoroughly impressive. Punctually at 8 o'clock, the Vory Rov. Father Kirk outered tho room, accompanied by Brothers Alfred (Superior), Coleman, and Edmund, those who had awaitod thoir arrival receiving them standing. An ellicient, though small, orchestra consisting of Messrs J. Ferry (piano), P. Bird (violin), and Trusso'l (cornet) opened tho proceedings with a lively overture, and an interesting programme of vocal items followed. During the interval occasion was taken to present the Brothers with an address of welcome. Mr T. Wixcey reading the same on behalf of the congregation. Reverend and Dear Brothers,— We, tho Catholics of Wangiiuui, heartily welcome you to our midst as the representatives of the fjroat Marist OVllor of teachers, wht <e members have achieved such signal success in tho scbools of Europe and of Australasia. Although wo have in tho past been most fortunate in securing good aud able teachors for our boys, wo b;ivo always looked forward to the time when mon liko yourselves, consecrated to God, would porfoct the good work of religious education do well begun by thoir teachers. For many yoars past our zealous pastor, tho Very Reverend Father Kirk, has laboured unceasingly to securo for our children the many advantages of your ministrations. This commodious schoolroom, and the wellbuilt monastery which stands close by,owo their existence to his zeal and energy, and wo heartily join with him in rejoicing that his arduous labours in this direction have at length boon crownod with success. From what wo have learned we have every reason to believe that you will preserve in tho minds of our children the traditions of tho " Island of Saints and Scholars," that dear old land to which so many ofusowo our birth and our faith. The famo of your Superior (Brother Alfred) as a teacher has already rosched us, and we sincerely trust that undor his ablo direction St. Mary's School will speedily attain the succoss and distinction long since soournd by tho Sacred Hoart School under the management of tho good Sisters of St. Joseph, Assuring you of our lioaity co-operation in your noble efforts. — We romnin, on bchalC of tUe Catholics of Wauginui, yours vory sincerely, JThomas Wixcs>y. Thoy had bean welcomed because they had como to impart a religious education to tho children, and ho folt gratified to find the people of Wanganui appreciated religious education at its true valuo. lie folt vory thankful to their reverend pastor, Father Kirk, who had worked so zoalously to provido them with such a lino schoolroom and eo commodious a monastery, lie could assure thorn that tho Brothers would endeavour to emulate tho zeal of the other moinbers of their order in othor places, and would do all in their power to give thoir childron a thoroughly Catholic education, so as to mako thorn not only staunch members of tho church but also good aud successful citizens. The Brothers then wont down tho room and were introduced to all present, rofroshmentß being served round during a very pleasant converf uziono. Tho musical programme was then rosumed, and at its closo tho V'ory Rov. Father Kirk expressed his thanks to tho committee of management and especially to tho latios who had provided refreshments.
