The National Insurance Company of .New Zealand was interested in a serious fire which occurred last week at Messrs Anthony Horde u and Co.' a stores, Sydney, to the extent of £2000 on the building, part of which, was re-insured. The South British Company had risks amounting to £11,500 on the buildings and stock, which, however, was largely reinsured. The fines recorded against Mr Hen* shaw, of the firm of Messrs W. J. Hunt and Co., of £200 and £100 in each of two oharges of Belling by auotion without a license, has been reduced to £o m each case. A man named Hunt was arrested on numerous charges, of forgery and. passing valueless cheques. The prisoner is a man who has been victimising shopkeepers for some time past. Mr D. H. MoArthur, has been appointed a member of the Wellington Land Board vice Messrs H. Bunny and Keece. The Eoyal Commission for the repre. sentation of Neve Zealand at the Cen* tennial Exhibition has been issued. The commissioners are ; — The Governor (President), Sir James Hector (VioePresident}, Hons T. W. Hislop and Waterhouse, the Mayor of Wellington, and Messrs W. H. Levin, A. Newman, W. Seed, Or. Tolhuret, W. Gable, and C Toxward. Mr Oallis has been appointed secretary to the oom mission, and the Qrst meeting was held yesterday, It was determined that 8,000 feet of space should be applied for. The attention of flock owners is also directed to the fact that two wool shows will be held, ane of 1887 and one subsequent clip of 1888; The two shows are to be judged separately.

December 3jo, An old man nanqed William Esky, better known as ''Old Ned" hanged himself at Kanieri last night. He was rather the worse for liquor. He was dead when found.

John Jamiesou, a middle aged mac, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of indeoently assaulting a child seven and a half years old.

DUNEDIN.

December 30 James Johnstone, alias Lavery, has been committed for trial for forging a cheque of £5 at South Dunedin, with intent to defraud George Hutcbings. Jftmeß Moore, a groom in the employ of Mr Taggart, died to-day from the result of injuries received about a month ago through a horse he was driving for Mrs John Roberts bolting.
