The Government have received a communication from Mr John Pender, on behalf of the Eastern Extension Cable Oampany, undertaking on the Ist July to make a reduction of ls 4_ per word on messages between England and Aus-* tralia, with further reductions should the proposal of the company for a lengthened subsidy be complied with. The Board of Conciliation, which was appointed to settle the difficulty between the wharf labourers and employers, arrived at a compromisa by the casting vote of the chairman. A revision of the rates and pay has beon agreed to, a small increase being made in some instances, and in others a slight reduction. (Received February 10, 1.30 a.m.) February 10. It is reported that Nordenfeldt strained his foreleg while training, and ifc is doubtful whether he will come to the post for any of tho events for which he is entered at the approaohing V.B.C. meeting. SYDNEY. February 9. In the Legislative Assembly to-day Mr Gavan gave notice that he will move to-morrow that the policy of the- Government does not satisfy the House. New South Wales and South Australia are joining the other colonies in their protest against any French oooupation of the New Hebrides. HOBART. j February 9. It is expeoted that a reconstruction of the Tasmanian Ministry will take place, as the Hon, Ayde Douglas, the present Premier, is about to proceed to England as Agent-General for the colony. February 10. The Tasmanian Government have definitely refused to inorease the subsidy paid by the colony to the Eastern Extension Gable Company. ALBANY. February 9. The R.M.S. Bengal arrived last night from London, with mails dated January ' Bth.
