The only nominations for Mayor to-day were Mr Joe Dransh'eld, formerly Mayor, and Mr George Elliot Barton. Mr Hutchison, late Mayor, withdrew from the contest.

The annual district meeting of the Wesleyan Church resolved — That this meeting urges upon the Conference the necessity of providing a more appropriate hymn book than the one at present in our Sunday schools ; that Sunday school teachers be recognised as sustaining the relation of class leaders to their scholars; and that in visiting a school the Minister shall take the several classes in turn, and deal with scholars separately respecting their religious experience, as iv the case of a quarterly visitation of the adult classes. We recommend also that a sermon, specially addressed to the young, be preached once a month in all our Churches.

The Mayor has received a communication from the Govern tneut to the effect that in future allsum3 forwarded for the Indian Famine Relief Fuud will be telegraphed to London free of charge £2,000 in all has been telegraphed home from here.

An attempt is being made to establish a Deep Sea Fishing Company. It is intended to carry on trawling at Port Underwood, and to have a curing and smoking shed there.

It is stated here on good authority that the value of the property destroyed by the Gisborne fire is equal in amouut to the total amount of tire insurance premiums paid to the various Insurance Companies at Gisborne and J^apier durthe last two years.
