RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. Howard Booth presided over a meeting of stewards of the Carterton Racing Club last evening. There were also present: Messrs J. C. Harp, P. Bain, AV. C. Deller, V. L. Robinson, E. J. Matson, R. J. Kemble and the secretary, Mr Mortensen. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Geo. E. Allen and G. A. Vincent. The treasurer reported a debit balance at the bank of £621 7s 3d. The Racing Conference wrote stating that owing to the war only a skeleton conference would be held during July at Wellington and suggesting that deputies from Wellington represent Wairarapa at the conference. The chairman said that Mr Eric Riddiford had consented to represent the Carterton Club. The chairman's action was endorsed. A letter was received from the secretary of the Racing Conference stating that ' September 12 had been recommended as the day for Carterton’s annual race meeting, and that Wanganui had applied for the same date. It was decided to adhere to the date recommended, September 12, and to protest against any other club racing on that day. The question of this year’s subscription was considered and it was resolved that the chairman and secretary draft a circular to be forwarded to members pointing out that when the war was over the course would need considerable money expended on it, and that the assistance of members would be appreciated.

SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY OVER £lOO RAISED. Yesterday the Parkvale and Waihakeke residents held a shop day in aid of the Heart-to-Heart Appeal. It was very successful and those responsible should feel proud of their effort which realised £ll3, with more returns to come in. A band of Maori women paraded the town and visited the saleyards and contributed songs. Another innovation was a young Jersey bull harnessed to a sledge. Upon his back was mounted a lad, and the animal was led by Mr C. Bayliss, the owner. Over £8 was obtained by an appeal made in this connection. A copper trail realised £3 14s 6d. The competition winners were: Dressed turkey, Mrs P. Burn; turkey dinner, Mrs W. Campin; hamper, T. Snell; spirits, A. McPhee; iced cake, Miss Annie McPhee; ham, Mrs K. L. Wakelin; cheese, C. Swinn.

Personal Items. Last Wednesday evening the Kokotau School was filled by residents of the district who had gathered to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs E. Smith, who will leave next week for Opotiki, where Mr Smith had purchased a farm. Cards were played during the evening, and at an appropriate interval'Mr W. M. Jury, on behalf of settlers presented Mr and Mrs Smith with two hearth rugs. Supiier was provided:' 1 ' Mr AV. Linton, manager of the Dalefield cheese factory, who had been attending the Southland Winter Show, at which the Dalefield factory was a successful exhibitor, has returned home. He visited Balclutha and many other places during his visit to the South Island. At a meeting of the committee of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. on Wednesday last Mr F. L. Barr was elected president, and Mr C. A. Chennells vice-president. Mr Barr referred to the excellent service which had been given to the Carterton branch over a long period of years by the retiring president, Mr A. T. Murray. Success at Poultry Exhibition. Mr A. J. Regan, of Carterton, a breeder of Old English Game birds, was successful in gaining two firsts and three special prizes at the New Plymouth Poultry Show. Mr Geo. Edge, of Carterton, will be an exhibitor at the Auckland Show next week with Rhode Island Red birds. Recently, Mr Edge sold birds to poultry breeders at Blenheim and Christchurch and has received inquiries for Rhode Island Reds from Westport and Dunedin fanciers.
