GREYTOWN

BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last night. Theye were present the Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton), Councillors W. A. Tate, A. Stuart, I. Blissett. E. Balfour, G. F. Eagar, H. J. Farley, F. Wood, H. C. Trotman, H. McKenna. • The poundkeeper reported that three head of cattle had been impounded during October. The secretary of the School Committee wrote asking that the water race culvert at the rear of the school be attended to. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.

The Council decided to purchase an extension ladder for the Fire Brigade Auxiliary. . -A letter from the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Railways, stated that his department was not prepared to instal a telephone at the Woodside Junction. Councillors ’> expressed the opinion that it was unfortunate that no satisfaction could be obtained in the matter. It was quite evident that although repeated efforts had been made those responsible did not realise the difficulty that passengers by the late rail car were sometimes placed in. “We’ll have to wait for the election,” said one councillor. The secretary of the .Fire Brigade forwarded a list of requirements for fire fighting in an emergency. It was decided that a circular be drawn up and sent to all house-hold-ers in reference to the use of fire prevention emergency appliances. The Works Committee reported that the Borough Foreman had served notices on 12 property owners to cut noxious weeds, and that in some cases he had received abuse in connection therewith. It was reported that repair work had been carried out at the Municipal Baths. The Gas Committee reported: The Electric Power Board notified that all the installation work signed for would be completed by the end of the month. It was decided, (1) That the gas works be closed on November 30; (2) That the stoker’s services be dispensed with; (3) That the manager be paid an additional £2 per week from November 14 to November 30. The manager reported that the gas made in October amounted to 121,000 cubic feet, compared with 263,000 cubic feet during the same month last year. The Mayor raised the question of a report of the Wairarapa Automobile Association meeting in which it was stated that nothing had been done in regard to cutting the broom on the Government section at the Papawai corner. He stated that the Council had written many letters to the Housing Department, but no headway could be made. The last letter was sent a month ago and no reply had been received. It was decided to obtain an opinion from the borough solicitor’ as to the legal position, and to take the necessary steps to bring matters to a finality. Bowling. A. Thompson and C. Larsen, of theCarterton Club, made a bold bid for the Grady Medals last evening. Good bowling by both pairs kept the spectators on their toes for the best part of the game. However, the holders, McLeod and Higgison, scored a nice four and a five and this lead they held throughout, winning by 28/18. In a game for the Gold Bars the holders, H. Wallace and J. Kiernan, scored a fine win from Brunton and Kilgour.
