PRICE INCREASES
ALLEGATIONS BY PREMIER OF VICTORIA. MANUFACTURERS ATTACKED. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) . MELBOURNE, November 16. Attacking price rises generally the Premier of Victoria, Mr Dunstan, said manufacturers were deliberately withholding stocks against a price rise. They were creating artificial shortages which appeared and disappeared automatically. For years manufacturers had adopted the same technique. He found it hard to understand why certain manufacturers and retailers should not be expected to carry at least a proportion of increased prices due to war conditions. Mr Dunstan’s statement followed an announcement that the price of tea in Australia will be increased twopence a pound from Monday. Popular brands will now sell at from 3s 6d to 3s 8d a lb—ls 3d above the pre-war price. The Price Commissioner, Professor D. B. Copeland, said the latest rise was due wholly to increases in overseas costs.
