NEWS REEL LIES

EXPOSURE OF NAZI FAKING. TYPICAL TRICK DETECTED IN DENMARK. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. August 5. Germany has been at great pains to prevent any leakage of news out of the countries she has conquered and now occupied which might give a true picture of conditions which are there obtaining. In this she has been largely successful, and such reliable pieces of information that do reach the outside world are necessarily generally of an individual nature. The following story, which has been obtained from a responsible source, is regarded here as significant of the general methods employed by the Nazis in the countries which they now occupy. One of the commonest features in Danish cinemas today is a U.F.A. news reel showing the enthusiasm with which the Danes acclaimed the entry of German troops into Copenhagen last April. On one occasion recently in Copenhagen a certain patriotic Dane was watching this news reel with growing disgust at the behaviour of his compatriots when suddenly to his horror he recognised his own wife standing at the very front of the crowd and frantically cheering and waving her umbrella. Ho intended on his return homo to take his wife severely to task. But she flatly denied having left home on that day. Unconvinced he persuaded his wife to go to the same news reel next day and see for herself. Sure enough when the procession portrayed on the screen reached a certain point, there she was madly waving her umbrella. Looking closely, however, (he woman noticed that in the film she was wearing a hat she had not worn for more than two years. Suddenly it. all dawned on her. The last time she had worn that hat was at. the King of Denmark's anniversary in 1937. The German film producers, in other words, had come across an old film picturing the enthusiastic reception of the King on that occasion, cut out suitable pieces and included them in their latest feature.
