WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

SOLWAY-MANAIA MEETING. “Many happy returns” was the greeting from all sides when on Thursday last the Solway-Manaia Women’s Institute celebrated their 4th birthday. Guests from sister Institutes and representatives of the Townswomen’s Guild, Plunket Society, National Welfare, W.D.F.U. and Salvation Army were cordially welcomed by the president (Mrs Munn), and later presented with shoulder sprays. Apologies for absence were received from Miss Gray, Mrs R. Allan and Mrs Blatchford. Before beginning festivities all present stood in silence in memory of the late Mrs Crewe (past president of the Bush-Wairarapa Federation). A piano solo by Mrs Groombridge, and songs by Mrs Olliver were much enjoyed. These were followed by a competition won by Mrs Robertson. Mrs Munn paid a tribute to the sterling qualities of the former president, Mrs McGovern and presented her with a token of appreciation from the members. Baby Tulloch also received a gift. Points prizes for the past year were: —Sewing, Miss Russell; flowers, Mrs Scrivener; cooking, Mrs Blatchford; potato growing, Mrs Munn. Those present did full justice to the afternoon tea, the outstanding point of interest being the birthday cake which was beautifully iced by Mrs Munn. The last item on the programme was a Peace Pageant by the children of the Institute. Mrs Church, ;the producer, Was congratulated on her work and presented with a posy. She in turn thanked Mrs Scrivener, Mrs Woollet and Mrs McGovern for their assistance. The singing of the National Anthem concluded an enjoyable gathering.
