W.C.T.U.

MEETING AT MASTERTON. INTERESTING ADDRESS BY MRS PATERSON. There was a splendid attendance of members and friends at the monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. on Thursday last, when Mrs H. Paterson, of Pahiatua, vice-president of the N.Z.W.C.T.U. addressed the gathering. Mrs Paterson, who visited America recently, described the home of the late founder of the W.C.T.U. movement, and told of how a dream became a reality because the founder had realised that a vision must have a programme. Mrs Paterson went on to tell how the W.C.T.U. members of U.S.A, concentrated on a five point star programme, as follows: — (1) Deepening of spiritual life. (2) Alcohol education. (3) Character building. (4) Citizenship.- (5) World peace.

A beautiful shoulder spray, made by Miss V. Jackson, was presented to Mrs Paterson by the president, Mrs Speight. The thanks of the meeting was .expressed by Miss Jackson. The temperance fact, supplied by Mrs Sims, was a statement taken from the U.S.A. Brewer’s year book, 1913, as follows: —“The chemists and the brewer’s alike admit that practically the food value of alcohol and even beer, in spite of its nourishing additions is too small to be considered. The quantity of beer necessary to nourish the system would be so large as to act as a poison! Afternoon tea and the pronouncing of the benediction brought to a close a most enjoyable meeting.
