Greytown Borough Co uncil

The usual monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last Monday night. Present—H Udy, senr., Mayor, (in the chair), Crs Udy, jnnr., St George, Fabian, Cameron, Varnham, Cotter and Trotter. The Clerk read the minutes of the previous meeting, which on the motion of Or StGeorge seconded by Or Cameron, were confirmed. COBBKBPONDENCK. Outwards was read re Fire bell, she re Cemetery Trustees. To the pouudkeeper re necessity to use cantion re brands of cattle impounded. To Mr Nidi re returns of sale of horse from pound. Inwards was read from S Lake and Sons rc cost of fire bell and naming L 27 as tbc value of a suitable belt for the Borough. Also from B Seagor quoting £8 per cwt. A letter was also presented by Or Cameron from Captain Pago, of the Wellington Fire Brigade, staling that Messrs Cable and Co., could supply a bell at £8 8s per owt and that a 1J cwt bell would be large enough for tbc Borough of Greytown. FIBS BEIL. Cr Fabian proposed and Cr Cotter seconded, that the Clerk write to Messrs Cable and Co , to ascertain their price for casting a bell 14 cwt, and to report to tbe Mayor who will b« authorised to order the boll which is not to exceed owt, and to be delivered safely in Greytown. Carried. On tbe motion of Cr Cameron it was resolved that tbe thanks of tbe Cunocil be forwarded to Captain Page lor his trouble, and to ask him to superintend the casting of the bell providing Messrs Cable and Co. get tbe order. It was resolved that the circulars received from Messrs Wood, Shand & Co., re Fire Engines be forwarded to tbe Secretary of the Fire Brigade. Some discussion resulted as to the position of tbehanging of anew bell, and it waa understood that the Volunteer Fire Brigade advocated some alteration in tbe bell tower. FINANCE committee’s BEPOET. IMPROVING BTEBETB, Cr Cotter said that as in a month's time thei Council wonld be in a good financial position and owe the bank scarcely anything, he would move that certain sums be apportioned to each and several streets where repairs and forming, metalling, or remetalling were necessary, and it devolved upon him to aak the Council to vote the following sums to the several streets named, as follows Kuratiwbiti Street £25, reinstalling and filling in ditch ; Kempton and Cross's Bonds £2O, Humphries and Cotter Streets £2O, Pnpawai Hoad £SO, Powbatu Road £2O, Great Frederick Street £ls. He said that the financial position of the Oorongh funds wonld, within a mouth, warrant tho grants lor all these streets and tbe work could be better accomplished in the winter time. He complimented the contractor upon the manner in wuich he had completed the work of the Powhatu Bridge. He said he bad not asked for a giant K.,’ the Main Street, bat he proposed that the sums named be expended. Ct Varnbuiu seconded. He said ho could take credit for initiating the scheme and he believed it was better to spend a good snm at one time than to be patching here and there. So far as Papnwai Road was concerned next to Kuratiwhiti it was the beet paving suburb to Greytown, and he heartily supported the motion. Crs Fabian and Cameron expressed their concurrence with the propositiou. The motion was carried.

BOUNDARY OF PAPAWAI ROAD. Respecting the survey ol boundaries of Papawai Road. it was resolved to assist the Bead Board by paying ball cost ol defining the boundaries. Cr St Qeorge moved that the Clerk write to Mr Buchanan, asking him to use his infiueaoe to have the services of a surveyor engaged in the matter of the channel reserve ; also that it be an instruction to the clerk to write to tho Crown Lands Commissioner once more upon tho subject. Seconded by the Mayor and agreed to. The proceedings were somewhat enlivened by the humorous holiday attitude of one of the Borough dignitaries, who after inviting the Mayor to leave the chair subsequently apologised and departed alter heartily shaking hands with all round the table in a most unmistakably cordial and affecting manner.
