Carterton Mayoralty.
To the Editor of the Standard,
Sib,—As the ratepayers of Carterton will bo called npon daring the next week or two to choose one from among themselves to fill the Mayoral chair, a few remarks before the battle will not be out of place. The first candidate to criticise is Me Jas Ridgway. He basis bis* claim to the civic chair of honour ou the following substantial qualification, viz., he is tho oldest settler, a practical road maker, honest, and does not go into the Council with an axe to grind ; further still, he is an independent man, willing to devote his time to tbe interests of tbe Borough. My fellow ratepayers will agree with me that these qualifications are as good as can be advanced by any other of the candidates, bat etill I would ask them to waive then judgments till tbe other candidates announce themselves, which they will do in the course uf a few days, unless they are afraid to meet such a formidable opponent as Mr Jas Ridgway. Hoping yon will insert this in your widely read columns. I am, Ac., CIIITEBION. Carterton, May 31.
