A Shocking Occurrence.
Hokitika, May 25. Mr Jas. Kennedy, of the Totara, was found dead yesterday, having been killed by a fall of a tree. It appears deceased has been dead since either Thursday or Friday last, as be had not been seen since that time. Yesterday morning two neighbors, suspecting something was wrong, went in search, and found him dead under a fallen tree a short distance on the tram from his own place. The head was nearly flattened, and the body slightly decomposed. By appearances he was felling a small birch tree, which struck against a dry red pine at right angles (the pine had previously been half cut through). This caught him on his backward retreat, and pinned him to the ground. Death must have licen instantaneous.
