Death of the Rev John Stewart.

Our many readers in the Wairarapa were acquainted with the Rev John Stewart, Presbyterian Minister, of the Lower Valiev, who some time ago left New Zealand for Australia. It is our melancholy duty this day to record his death, which has been communicated to us by the Rev A. Thomson, his successor in this district. Mr Stewart died at Jamieston, South Australia, on the 6th April. We feel sure the news of the rev gentlemen’s demise will be received with sorrow in every part of the Valley. For nearly fourteen years he was engaged in evangelistic work in Waihenga, Featherston and other parts of the Lower Valley, and his pioneer labors were anything but light. He was of a genial homely disposition, and his visits over the country were always welcomed. Though he labored chiefly for the Presbyterian Church he had sympathies extending beyond it, and his chief aim was to do good wherever an opportunity presented He has entered into his rest, but his influence will live long after him and his memory will be treasured in the hearts of the people. On Sunday evening next at_ Martinborough the Rev Mr Thomson will preach a memorial sermon.
