London, May 16. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Kaikoora arrivea at Plymouth yesterday afternoon, her cargo of frozen mutton being in good condition. May 17. The Berlin press is urging the necessity of mobilising the German Army Corps during the autumn. The crisis in France is delaying the settlement of the New Hebrides, and attention is to be called to the matter in the House of Commons. £20,000 has been refused for the racehorse Bendigo. Great speculation is taking place in colonial securities, and large purchases have bean made at advanced rates. May 18. A proclamation has been issued announcing that for the future a coinage of four shilling pieces will be made. In the French Chamber of Deputies a vote of confidence in the Government was defeated by 275 against 257. The resolution of the Budget Committee for a reduction in the expenses was carried by 312 to 142. It is expected that either M. de Freycinet or Clemeucean will undertake the formation of a Cabinet. St Petersburg, May 17. Five Nihilists, who were found guilty of participation in the recent attempts on the life of the Czar, were executed yesterday. Brussels, May 16. Serious strikes have occurred at the principal collieries throughout the country. Troops are being held in readiness to quell any disturbances, but hitherto no rioting has taken place. New York, ' May 16. It is reported in this city that the Hawaiian Government will shortly despatch a man-of-war to Samoa, and from thence the vessel will proceed to Tonga for the purpose of annexing that group to the Hawaiian Kingdom, or of concluding a treaty similar to that which has recently been arranged with Samoa. Ottawa, May 17 Mr Wm O’Brien, the Irish Nationalist leader, addressed an open-air meeting in Toronto tonight. The proceedings were interrupted by constant cheering for the Queen and the Marquis of Lansdowne, and howling against Mr O’Brien, who was compelled to desist from speaking. Sydney, May 18. Mr W. E. Sheridan, the tragedian, who has for some time been seriously ill, died in Sydney today. Melbourne, May 17. The manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand reports as follows of the local market : —Wheat, 4s to 4s Id, quieter; barley, 4s 6d to 5s 6d, quiet; oats (feed sorts), 2s 9d to 2s lid, good demand; oats (milling sorts), 2s lid to 3s, fair demand; New Zealand oats, under bond, 2s to 2s 3d, steady but not active.
