Wairarapa South County Council.

This Council met at Carterton on Batorday. Present —Ora W. Booth (chairman), A. Matthews, W. C. Buchanan, H. Bunny, H. E Bunny, J. Tnlly, C. Phillips, and J Martin, jun. lows From Colonial Secretary, asking for a return of indebtedness of local bodies. From same, advising the Council that the special order re special rates has been gazetted. From Col Treasurer dealing to know if the Council reqnires loan to be paid at once or by sundry advances. From same, asking chairman’s declaration to be made in respect to loan. From same, re details of accounts to be forwarded under provisions of Counties Act. 1886. From same, advising remittance of £162 and £6OO respectively bridle track, Kaiwbata, and Mattinboro’-Pabana road. From Provincial District Auditor, advising audit and passing of accounts. From same, returning certified voucher re Heagerty’s contract, &o. From various County Councils, in reference to system of legalising roads advocated by the Wairarapa South County Council ; some in favour of same, others declining to move in the matter.

From Department of Justice sending copy of rider to verdict passed by the coroner's jury which sat to enquire into the death of the Maori, Wi Hiriui, asking the Council to consider the same. From the Wairarapa County Council and the Manawatn County Council in lelerenoe to the track to Otaki over the ranges. From the Featherston Town Board refusing to sanction the granting of ilaughtering licenses to Messrs Bale and Abbott respectively, as the slaughter houses are within the proscribed limits of the town district boundary. REPORTS. The Works Committee’s report and tbs report oi the committee re clerk's salary were read. THE PLATFORM BRIDGE. Gr Phillips asked a question in reference to the Council’s liability conceiving the platform bridge now being removed. The chairman recommended Cr Phillips to give notice of motion if he required a report upon the same. Cr Phillips said that the Featherston Boad Board were most deeply interested in the matter, he thought that some portion of the license fees should be devoted to the expense attached to the removal, i&c., of this bridge. BIDBB OF JURY. Cr H K Bunny said in referenoe to the rider of the Coronet's Jury that the Taratahi Carterton Boad Board bad received a similar notice. SLAUGHTER HOUSES. Cr H Bunny in referenoe to the Featherston Town Board’s objection to the slaughter* houses within a mile of the town, moved that the County Clerk take a legal opinion upon the matter and in the meantime it be deferred until next meeting oi Council. Seconded by Cr Matthews and carried. The Clerk said that there were several persons, and one a professions 1 butcher, slaughtering, without licenses, in the district. OTBTKB SHELL CREEK. Mr Tally intimated to the Council that he consented to a road by Oyster shell Greek, in the Martinborongh Faboa district being made. MATARIWA BRIDGE,

Or Phillips said if necessary he would move that the Clerk to County Council write to the Taratabi Carterton Road Board and the Greytown Borough Council, re taking the necessary steps under the statute for holding a poll of the ratepayers in their respective distiiota iu the matter.

CrHßßunny severely aminadverted the action of Cr Phillips in stating that the Carterton Road Board would only give their sympathy towards the movement in favor of the erection of this bridge ; he said that the Taratabi Carterton Road Board were never unwilling to help in a ligitimate manner, but would not divert moneys from roads to build a bridge for a small portion ol the community He was surprised to find Gr Phillips occupying a public position as he did, writing to the Government in snoh a way ; he would second Or Phillips' motion that a poll be taken. Or H Bunny moved end Cr Matthews Meonded that the Featberston Town Board Eeoeive a subsidy ol £lO, towards maintenance ol the main road. Carried LEGALISING BO ADS. Mr Merchant, Chief Surveyor, wrote expressing his sympathy with the Council's proposals in reference to this subject. Gt Buchanan moved that this Council strongly urge upon the Government the necessity of legislating as soon as possible in the matter of public roads. Seconded by Cr Matthews and oanied. KAIWHATA TBACK. A repoit was read from the Public Works Committee re the KmwhaU Bridle Track which was adopted. SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting was then held for the purpose of considering and settling audited accounts and considering and settling estimates for the ensuing year, and upon the motion of Cr Booth the accounts and estimates, Ac., were adopted and the accounts ordered to be settled.
