MASTBUTON v. GREYTOWN—FIRST TEAM MATCH.

On Saturday two doughty champion teams met at Greytown iu the struggle lor the supremnoy of their respective towns in this popular and invigorating game. The first match played on the reserve was between the junior teams iu the respective clubs—which wo report below, but tho senior and most momeutus struggle being between the formidable first teams from the two most important football centres in the valley, demands the first consideration. At about quarter to four this event which has been looked forward to by tho votaries of football ■v'th some considoiable and anxious interest, commenced by Whatman kicking oil the ball for Masterton, v.ho had won the togs. The ball was adroitly returned by Eyan, who thus made a good bit of ground for his side. J Beard then showed up well, and although he made a supreme effort to gain ground he was promptly laid hors de combat by the invincible W Ft tv. The Masteitou meu then had a turn and made things very iirely for their opponents, the** forwards acting like the progress of a sweeping deluge, w 1 : ■ t'.cir progress was abruptly stopped by J Heard and A UJy, the latter of whom very cleverly punted into touch. Muter' u ooon alter kicked out an 1 Dyer made a good stroke fur bis side, hut Tom Hawke displayed some good punting and the hall soon after was beinp, eonsidi niblv tor*n; I i._ Matterlon 25. K IMv then carried the ball over the line and touched down amid applause. After a long tun of E Udy’s which was adeptly intercepted by F Felling and Welch, Mother |

After which, half time was cahed. when E. Udy afterwards took the kick off (sides being reversed) and made a most powerlulkick toward the western goal ; this was returned well by Perry, and then some good play ensued, Eyan making a grand drop kick which nearly resulted in a goal. E-Udy as ' ward ran up well but did not en scrimmages quite as much as be migb done ; C. Beard was playing a powerful game on the touch line and he waa much applaud** by the lookers on. Tom Hawke san • Humphries’ backing up and oollaung stage of the game was excellent. Boydhousa made several good return kicks for his a (Masterton) and the game was very oveniy contested until time was called, when in# game resulted in a draw, nei'her side l>em « credited with a score. The pi»y of the ree young Tu)lys{W.. 8.. and H„) for Oreylow.. deserves special mention, as they «oug * hard gsme. H. Tally's leg being hurl m a scrimmage towards the close of the K*®® - was considered by some that W. Tn y full back was rather overweighed—but tn« was merely a matter of opinion. ' V- . er s' worked hard as any of the half backs in the Masterton team, and Bannister, Welcii ana Kibblewbite were very conspicuous among uis Masterton forwards. Ellers stopped some good rushes and did seme good punting, but considering that the Masterton team had tne advantage in weight there was some uncalled for roughness displayed. A. Udy for Greytown was scarcely up to his usual good mar , but C. Udy and Goldsmith were in splendid form (and but for a slight slackness on the part of one or two men on Greytown side Greytown should have won easily ; the team ' suffered somewhat no doubt by the absence ’ of J. looker and Webster as players, and on , account of losing Boydbouse, who is now a Masterton man ; still the Greytown team as ' constituted on Saturday was a credit and ' honor to its district. They (the members) met an unusually powerful team anil valiantly held their own. With a little more practice together this season they cocld meet any football ( team in the colony and need not fear the i result. Mr 8. Wiokersou umpired for Mas- ■ terton, MrJ. Toeker for Greytown, and Mr Booth of Featherston was referee.

THE JUNIOR MATCH. This match does not call for any partionlar comment farther than that the Greytowa lads were greatly overweigbed by their opponents, who bore down upon them like an avalanche, but could not score until nearly the end of the game, when Masterton obtained a try, and the match resulted in one point to nil in favor of the visitors.
